Morning all :D I've had about 2 hours sleep DS3's not well so he's off today but sleeping soundly now thankfully!
The quilt tips will be needed this morning as I've just found out his one won't fit it the new washer :o so thanks for that.

Hope everyone is warm and dry we didn't get much rain overnight luckily.

Just watching BBC news about the apple harvest an English orchard bloke is talking about growing gala and braeburns as well as cox's as people are buying these more..prices up 20% but we knew that was coming due to the poor pollination. They're hoping it'll be back to normal next year.

I know I'm going to miss my brothers ones this year,I'm normally cursing 'cos we can't keep up but haven't had one this year!

Right, off to tend the lurgy ridden have a great day all will try and pop back later XX

Sorry I posted quickly and briefly but pleased you saw the funny side to it. I had visions of you running round knocking on neighbours doors telling them to unplug everything!
At least you now know how long it takes to do it should you ever need to ;)

I awoke this morning really pleased with my `practice` run. It actually worked as though it was a real scenario, which I thought it was at the time. First thing I did was to get the big flasks filled, then pulled out all re -chargeables and chargers and was surprisingly quick at locating them and hooking them up for top-up. Candles are always handy but I just need to put the matches in a handier place. Food was good too as I got a meal sorted quickly. I may just put crackers and a couple of bits together in a bag so a picnic meal will be even easier

I burnt my hand once by grabbing a cast iron handle and I only had cold water and a small burn pack, which was in my wall mounted first aid kit. Since then I did buy a dedicated burn kit, which is also wall mounted and I sent one each to my dd`s as we never know when a bad burn might strike. Both kits are on the wall in the utility room and easy to grab

Looking out at the wreck the wind has made of my garden! I'm glad I'm not relying on my apple tree crops to last me through the winter, they were carrying about half what they usually do this year and now most of these are over the lawn and veg beds. Oh well, I'll pick them up later and keep the best, the more battered windfalls go to a friend who keeps goats. I get them returned eventually as goat manure for the veg beds and the odd bag of mohair fibre for spinning.:rotfl:

I'm mostly prepped for the winter weather, I had OH's car yesterday so I cleared his boot and put in the emergency kit. Two old cotton rugs (great for under tyres in slush), a spade, bag with old fleece blanket, old fleece top, water, some biscuits etc. The car has things like a wind up phone charger, first aid kit, hi-vis vests and all the usual emergency kit for all year round motoring of course. And my car has more by way of supplies of course, OH is usually in his car on his own, my car is the family car.

  • Morning all, we picked our apples last week as they were dropping like......well apples!!!! I thought we would acrually keep more of them if we picked, even though it is very early than let them fall off and bruise. I'm going through the box this morning and will process any that have damage and pop them in the freezer as puree. It's a lovely day down here sunny but with the odd light rain shower which is giving us lovely rainbows. He who knows is out with the lurcher and I am making sweet potato and lentil soup to use up a potato that has seen better days. Then I'll be tackling the house - why can men not do even rudimentary cleaning? Have a good one all, Cheers Lyn x.

On the way back along the M8 there were A LOT of cars pulled over with recovery vehicles with them. If anyone hasn't prepped their car this is def the time to get it done. Remember to check the tyres too.

It was lovely to meet you and I can assure you, you weren't rambling. It's good to talk!

D&DD, the veg beds themselves are pretty sheltered and in fact apart from fifty or so apples landing directly on them most of the winter transplants seem to be okay. I planted out 16 Cos lettuce seedlings the other day (50p from the Reduced section at the GC, well worth a shot) and the scraggy remains of a pack of living lettuce that I removed from Posh Neighbour as she was about to bin them. They're all doing well and I put all the vunerable potted fruit bushes and such in the greenhouse on Sunday. The allotment is possibly flattened though, I'm hoping my sweetcorn isn't too badly damaged. I can't go up to see, the allotment site is a dangerous place in high winds. I was up there a few years ago and a neighbours glass cold frame came flying over the hedge, missed me by about three feet and smashed into pieces on the ground, eek.

Just heard too that the roof has blown off the main building of one of the local high schools, fortunately not the one that DS goes to though. As many of the kids as possible have been sent home and the emergency contractors are trying to make it safe but it looks like they might have to close for two or three days. Fortunately it's a Council run school though, they'll have a decent emergency plan. (Tis over the county line from here so I don't know exact details.)

So I think it's possible I'll be getting a couple of phone calls tonight looking for emergency childcare for the 11-12 year olds, that's one of the things that happens when you're a SAHM and most of your friends work. I don't mind, I wouldn't like my 11 year old to have to stay at home on her own. If I have the same three as last time I'll get them caught up on their homework, they can make their own pizzas for lunch and then spend the afternoon playing games if they want. And my kids will moan because they're nothing wrong with their schools and they'll be in them, lol.

Isn't cold water the best for burns anyway? Thats what we always do.

  • Hello D & DD - thanks I did have a lovely trip and DD1 and I did lots of unpacking and sorting out after her move in August. We had gone up to put the flat pack furniture together for her as she teaches and doesn't have a great deal of time and we do!! As a treat she got us tickets to the Rugby on Saturday afternoon and it was the best, I've never been to a live game before only watched on TV and the atmosphere was incredible, very family and a great buzz. And we won!!!!!!!! Nice to be back home now though and I've put the house to rights this morning, bless him, he tries but it's never the same as doing it yourself is it? Cheers Lyn x.

Our elect went off early hours and only just back on again. Went docs this morning and the Gala Water has burst its banks and flooded all the fields, with dodgy bits on the A7 where there's run-off from the fields. Our practics nurse had to walk to work (got soaked) as a tree was down in her drive and needs a chainsaw. O happy days but at least I'm back online :)
