I do this as well. Never had to use one though, except for the rain of course :)

I think the deterrent effect of having it with you serves to ward off miscreants. To be honest, I'm not sure how effective I'd be if I had to fight off an attacker with my brolly. :)

I'd like to say a big thank you for that P, on behalf of all those FMs, who are currently eating their evening meal. :p

I think there's a lot to be said for a pocket umbrella. I carry one in my hand if I'm going anywhere dodgy. It's every bit as solid as a policeman's truncheon, but they cannot object to me carrying it.

I have a umbrella in my bag.... Somewhere...

    I carry this.

If I'm in my car, in addition to all the usual car stuff (fire extinguisher, jump leads, snow shovel, etc.) I also have at my disposal, 2x 1st Aid kits, and a pouch containing:-

    2x Space blankets

    2x Yorkie Bars

    2x Blackfriers Flapjacks

    1x torch/inspection lamp

    1x 500ml bottle of water

    1x note pad

    2x ballpoint pens

    1x Craft Knife

Also, carried separately, 1x pack of moisturising wipes.

If conditions look like being really bad, and/or I'm travelling somewhere off the beaten track, I take along my German Army, sleeved sleeping bag.

It's excellent because, you can unzip and fold back the bottom, allowing you to walk, and even drive, while wearing it.

ETA: Nearly forgot. I always carry one of these in my coat pocket.
Except mine's red, so it's easier to locate, if dropped.

I have the torch, pens and paper, have space blankets in the car, and could probably find a lot of the things in the run lying round the house. Feeling better prepared already. Thanks for your help :D

It just keeps getting better, doesn't it?! Despite the hiatus with the data sharing scheme, we're still going to opt out this week through our GP. DS' GF went to do this at her surgery, and none of the admin team knew what she was talking about, yet other surgeries I know of are eager to give out forms to patients, very disjointed.

The meeces are sneaking back into my pantry - two huge bags of oats have been got at. Really peeved as I just bought a bag to replace another they'd chewed and couldn't believe the price hike - from 95 pence to £1.65 in a couple of months!

Belated ((hugs)) to you, siegemode, on the loss of your kitty, the pics are lovely.

 There really is no putting this can of worms back together, is there?! Barstewards.

Have changed out the water carrier last week, one of three hidden up around the home, plus there are lots of 2 litre bottled water here and there.

I've given some thought to dustiness and it brought to mind the nuisance of wearing contact lenses, back in the day. Of how grit and dust can get under them and scratch the surface cells of your cornea. An optician at the time described it as looking like snail trails across your eyeball when he was checking on my eyes.

It's bliddy painful. And if there was a lot of dust in the atmosphere, or even just in your immediate surroundings, you could be in trouble as a lens wearer and might want to think about always having the lens care kit to remove them and your glasses as a back up.

Spare glasses in my current prescription (plus my current prescrition) live in my BOB and it's a very good idea to have spares with you when out. Imagine if you have really poor eyesight, you're out miles from home with your car, and you suffer a catastrophic spex failure. I sure as heck couldn't drive without mine, Mrs Magoo would be my new name.

The Late Mrs Magoo, I reckon, in short order.

Someone was asking earlier what to put in a BOB. Mine reflects that home and work are a 5 min walk apart. The BOB goes with me in case of a bizarre set of circs meaning I couldn't access my home for some time.

Meds, cash, small first aid kit, ladies' monthly supplies, a swiss army knife, mobile charger, two torches, a small washkit, whatever I need for that day, a couple of changes of undies and a pair of socks, pkt paper tissues, space blanket and one or two random bits of kipple. I can overnight with this bag at a pinch as long as I were to be in a building. I'm thinking of a circumstance which temporarily rendered my block of flats off-limits. I have friends on nearby streets and further afield in the city and could scrounge up a sofa (and offer reciprocal facilitlies in my turn, of course).

If I was out and about further afield, it would be a lot more comprehensive, particularly if I had a car. Just realised that it's 17 years this June since I last owned a car.

By gum, that's longer than I did have one for. Mind you, I still keep my hand in by driving other people's cars. If I'm feeling generous, I even ask them if they'd mind first.

  • Late catching up with this thread, I wanted to add my condolences to Siegemode on the loss of your beautiful, beloved cat. My young boy Marley looks strikingly similar. There is nothing as beautiful as a tabby.

What a wonderful long life she had with you, so many memories.

You wouldn't think it but, one of the hardest things to buy, as a vegetarian, is sweets.

Many packs don't carry the "Suitable for Vegetarians" logo (and some of those that do, only display it in small writing on the back of the packet), meaning you can spend ages, reading the ingredients lists.

Simple boiled sweets (eg. Foxes Glacier mints) tend to be OK, but you would be surprised how many sweets contain animal products.

I was in £world earlier, and found a smaller, lighter, pruning saw.
    10q9st5.jpg
True, the blade is only about half the length of the larger saw, but the closed length is about 3" shorter, and it is less than 1/3rd the weight.

I have recently got some marshmallow seeds partly as they seem to be a pretty flower as well as having a number of herbal health uses, but it also means we can make "real" marsh mallows with no geletine and all the other stabalisers.

Not veggy myself although was for a number of years and still often have veggy meals. But we have our hens for really happy FR eggs-caught one of the girls mid plop today and actually saw the egg come out, can't get fresher than that lol, we do eat meat but deliberately seek out high quality locally produced high welfare FR meat. Strangely buying direct from producers means the price we pay is often the same or only just above the supermarkets and if I bulk buy sometimes its cheaper, shows how much of a rip off the SM''s are.

The training consists of learning to roll your newspaper around an iron bar :rotfl:I think that's one that only belongs in spy novels tbh, although you can get a bit of power behind some of the Sunday papers with all the supplements :)
Still waiting for that storm that we were promised, better to be prepared and nothing happens than unprepared when it all falls apart though. BB thanks for the link to that sleeping bag on Am7z0n, I might be tempted by one of those when have a bit of spare moolah.....
