that's scary as! it would make you want to prep even harder, something big is going to happen in the not so distant! and I will be ready as I can be on my small income, I wouldn't know what its like to go out shopping the way I used to buying nice smellies and stuff for myself now any spare cash goes on hoarding hoardable grub and getting garden tools /compost etc up to growable standards.really want a few chickens but really afraid of mice and the bigger version(cant even say their name) as they would be attracted by chicken food./corn etc.C.R.A.P.R.O.L.L.Z #7 member N.I splinter-group co-ordinater

Evening all. Blowing an absolute hooley here with rain being driven sideways onto my windows. The wind is very strong and I scuttled across one bit of street on my way home from work as there were several metal signs, hanging from chains, which were flying horizonal in the wind and looked fit to fly loose. Bygorry, they'd likely kill someone if they did.
My city is faring well thus far, although we are lost somewhere under that smorsabord of red and yellow warnings in southern England. Our river is a tiddler compared with many and is well down. Biggest problems are that the gullies in the roads can't cope with the rain at its most intense, so we get temporary floods. If it goes too far, too fast, they can cause lakes which back up and overtop the kerbs. And several roofs are leaking.
Well, I guess if the wind lifts more slates and tiles, they'll be more of those. Makes it a good idea not to keep treasured items in the loft in case of water ingress.
Speaking of ingress, we've had burglaries going gang-busters here, both home and business, shed and outbuilding. If economic times get harder it'll only get worse. Just hope that they won't do my lottie shed over for the 3rd time in 3 weeks, it's not doing the shed any good at all. Not to mention the rate of attrition on my normally sunny disposition.
moments_of_sanity, I have just been in a Farmious Foodius and have discovered that they have just started stocking Princes brand chicken in white wine sauce, chicken in curry sauce and chilli con carne at 89p a can. I consider that pretty decent and have bought a few and am having some of the creamy chicken tonight. Seens like a useful store cupboard item.
I shall go read more about this other banker death, seems that either they know something and are about to blab and are being 'suicided' or they know something wicked this way comes and don't intend to wait around for it.

moments_of_sanity wrote: »Hi all, hope you are bearing up with all this awful weather. I lurk lots on this thread but rarely post (posts generally give me most of the excellent info I need), however, in the last week my DH has gone from being a PAYE temp to having to go self employed to maintain his employment. This mean he has to pay for van rental etc as he is a delivery driver and this will be mean we are losing a minimum of £55 a week in salary!
I don't work due to ill health and we have 2 teenage DD's who are currently doing A levels. We also have 2 cats (cost is £20 a month to feed) and 2 dogs (cost £15 a month to feed). I try and use my ESA allowance to buy the food so that is about £142 every 2 weeks, if I need to buy extra food, I can use the savings account but I wonder if you could suggest some foods (mainly tinned) that I should be stocking up on (for those weeks when DH doesn't get enough work).
I have 3 freezers full of food, foraged fruit, meat, milk, bread etc. I also have a supply of baked beans, spaghetti, pasta, flour, spices, herbs, sugar etc but can you suggest things I might look at adding?
I try and spend approximately £2.50 per day per person for meals and snacks (home made). This also includes breakfast and I currently have 9 jars of marmalade after making some at the weekend.
Many thanks.
So sorry to hear of your predicament, the old style daily have great ideas so it might be worth a look on there.
Tinned foods that are handy are:
Tinned mince, Stewed steak, FB pies, Corned beef,
Ham, Chicken in White sauce, Curry, Chilli
Sliced beef in gravy (poundland have them at the moment)
Cheese sauce mix handy for making macaroni cheese etc so you don't need to buy cheese
Rice pudding, semolina, evaporated milk, dried milk, tinned fruit, packets crumble mix, jelly, flour (sr, plain and bread), yeast, baking powder, bicarbonate of soda, packet or tinned soups, kidney beans, butterbeans, tomatoes, passata, oil of choice, sweetcorn, peas, sliced beans, mixed veg, beans and sausages, jams, honey, syrup and peanut butter, sugar, porridge oats(the proper ones not instant)
Parmesan cheese lasts for ages in the fridge. Butter and lard freezes well.
Write out recipes that you know your family will like and make them now so there are no moans when you have to rely on your stocks
Don't forget to stock up on Toilet rolls, washing powder, softener, white vinegar, washing up liquid, bin bags etcBlessed are the cracked for they are the ones that let in the light
