It's just started raining here. Have been out all morning checking out the boot sales and CSs but nothing much found, the weather was strangely quiet in that "calm before the storm" sort of way so hope nothing too terrible coming this way. Still, not much else to do but sit it out, bins are tucked away, I know where the torches , lanterns and candles are and have a good supply of emergency [STRIKE]chocolate[/STRIKE] rations on hand. There would have to be a lot of flood water over a wide area before it reached our door but it may yet happen.... have ordered a discounted camping tarpaulin from Am7z0n with some vouchers I had, plan to put it in the BOB. Smaller to pack away and lighter than a tent and should be enough to keep the rain off in a crisis but wouldn't be much good on a day like today except as a kite :rotfl:0

The weather here is appalling. I had a weather warning regarding the wind. It is very windy but luckily I am on the lee side of the building so am rather isolated from it all.
As for those that are being flooded, the problem is that climate change is making these sorts of once in a century storm a fairly regular event.
We should have never have allowed building on flood plains, to start with. Without the natural flood defences we have opened ourselves to this on a regular basis. It's really easy to default to cynicism these days, since you are almost always certain to be right.0 -
The wind and rain is whistling through at the moment here.
I feel very fortunate in that I haven't personally been affect, but generally the scale of the flooding is quite mind boggling, not to mention the coastal storms, and now the red warning for winds.
I don't think the government and EA are perfect, but the length of time this has been going on is pretty unprecedented, it is very difficult to control the situation.
It seems as if they are having a COBRA meeting all the time - it's almost the norm nowEarly retired - 18th December 2014

I posted a week or two back about the EA opening the Leigh sluice gates on the Medway sending a deluge of water down the river. Since them we have spoken to friends of friends whose business was destroyed by the flood which arrived with only FOUR MINUTES warning:eek::eek: I thought at the time it was tragic but maybe it was the lesser of two evils. But it turns out it would have been completely unnecessary if the EA had done the job it is supposed to do. The Medway is tidal so there is a holding reservoir further up river which is supposed to release water when the tide drops. That way they can maintain a fairly constant level in the river. It seems, from what I have heard from locals - and I admit it may be hearsay and exaggeration - that they had not been letting the water drain away sufficiently prior to the storms so there was no spare capacity to absorb the flood water. And even then, they MUST have known they would have to let a lot of the water out in a short space of time and it beggars belief that they could only give four minutes warning. Much of the devastation could have been avoided or at least minimisedIt doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!0

Scary times. Here is some info on the Leigh Sluice if anyone wants a read http://www.leighhistorical.org.uk/History/Flooding_Leigh_IV.htm
I have no idea about the holding reservoir, I do know that the Medway is tidal to Allington, where the lock marks the border between the tidal and non-tidal sections of the river.
Regardless, the EA must have known more than 4 minutes prior to the event and should have given far more warning. What exactly can anyone save in 4 minutes, particularly in a business environment?? Ridiculous.Spam Reporter Extraordinaire

Is anyone else fed up with hearing the msm continually saying things like the worse storm since..... or the highest rainfall since records began etc. Then there's the blame game either climate change, global warming or the Jet Stream or some other scientific reason like the quasi whatchamacallit. I've read a little on weather manipulation and wondered if anyone else has any ideas or views. When I mentioned it to a friend and my family I was laughed at but there's plenty of info out there in tin hat land. This for example,
http://www.cuttingedge.org/News/n1694.cfm
So my question is why not use this technology to help populations avoid disaster or at least reduce the storms or effects. Tis both a strange and frightening world.
The wind has been up all day here, but apart from one downpour so far we've not had much rain and that bright yellow thing that appears from time to time is hovering. Take care all, hugs to all those coping with the floods or fears of.0 -
I feel like Im sat in a wind tunnel here. Watching a slim conifer out back bending sideways, Oh well if it snaps it will solve the problem of me chopping it down and shouldnt do much damage if it does fall. Going to drive and pick Dgs up from his minder and his Mummy from work to save them walking in it. There but for the grace of god etc.
As for the floods, some serious discussion in a warm room ahead for politicians, well paid jobs in think tanks for others and a difficult poor future for those at the sharp end me thinks.:mad::mad: Its not as if any of them would be able to sell up and move is it?
All I have heard on tv today is 'its a red alert' so what do we do? I went shopping to stock up and will stay in as much as possible other than that pray that the neighbours take their damned wheely bins in so kind men passing dont have to keep dragging them off the road - OH wouldnt let me do it in case I got hurt and he is no state to try and pick them up. Finally someone dragged them well back but they seem to move too easily even when left lay downClearing the junk to travel light

as I must admit in certain parts of the pig paddocks the mud will come up eaily half way up the boot.
I used to have muckers years ago when I had horses, I found them ideal for around the yard ( these are the walking type boot ones)
edit.... I have just seen the muck tay boot on the bay, I have seen them round the Agri shows.. but I was a bit worried about, 'what if I get mud on the top half of the boot? would the water/mud go through to the inside ? lol
I have tay sport muck boots they are a more comfy as the hard part does not go as far up the shin. You can brush off the mud from the material.
I have pacours 2 but they have plenty of calf room. Hubby has pacours and although I hate it when we match we both struggle with footwear and these have both came out on top for us.
I walk miles with the dogs and these are holding out great. The cheaper version tend to wear down on concrete quickly as they are not designed to withstand that kind of wear.
People wear Chameau for shows then get home and put the proper wellis on lol.
I love wellies and willies (DH only of course)

It's terrible here plus the car chose now to start playing up and the dog is not well.
More and more houses flooded plus more people without electricity.
Scurries off to get candles etc... x0 -
