An interesting guy from the Geological Society was making the point that a lot of the houses near the rivers used to have basements that only stored coal! Now they are used as living accommodation.

In Bewdley nr Worcester a few new houses have been built not with stilts but with a space underneath that can be used as say a car port or storage. So the living accommodation is 10ft above water.

People need information/advice and to be frank I think a lot of MP's could learn a hell of a lot from this thread as could a lot of people.

It's the best thread on MSe :D

We once looked at a house with a view to buying, that was right on the river bank at Bewdley. The owner cheerfully told us that it flooded and because of that the bottom floor had a stone floor and stone walls up to dado height, they had ropes and pulleys off the ceiling which they would use to hoist up the dining table and chairs that were what the room was used for.

We didnt buy it, but largely because we were very young and felt we wouldn't cope - now I might deal with that better.
I wanna be in the room where it happens

It is indeed very shocking!! All very well DC saying help is priority they should have been getting it way before now!!

A lot of lessons need to be learnt and clearly Worcester and that area has it a lot more under control.

  • Shocking too how senior politicians are now 'visiting' the flooded areas to review the situation, how can they use this dreadful situation to further their own political interests? scoring points off each other in debate in a parliamentary session is one thing but trying to score points off the opposition whilst actually visiting a disaster area is underhand and immoral in my opinion, bad people!!!

It's really easy to default to cynicism these days, since you are almost always certain to be right.

  • they can stop for lunch somewhere, open the door and the cat will sit quite happily outside and then get back in again when they're ready to go.

I don't think Buggalugs would do that.

I am currently following The People's Bank UK who are hoping to set up a slightly better bank... I really hope it happens.

BedsitBob thanks for the water container advice, I will put that on the to do list for the weekend.

I am another one who has wondered about what I would do with my cats... at least I could leave food and litter trays upstairs to keep them going for a while.

Some people were remaining in their flooded homes due to pets, but what would you do if you were surrounded by water? How on earth do you convince your dog to go to the loo in that?!

I found this. I wondered if it would do with some modifications and it could probably be fastened to a trolley in it's collapsed form. It would at least provide pacing room in an emergency evac. situation. It weighs 4kg.

I can't do multiple quotes, but Happy Days89, Rosemary Jane and Grandma247, thank you so much for those suggestions, some kind of indoor portable enclosed pen would be the way to go, I think. My cats would not be able to fend for themselves outside and like nuatha, I would try and stay with them at home if at all possible, but to have some kind of back-up plan as to how I would keep them in one place in an emergency shelter would set my mind at rest somewhat.

Unfortunately my only possible cat foster-carers live close to me, so if I had to evac in an emergency, the likelihood is they would, too.

This is such a great thread, by the way; I read it most nights and have learnt a lot.
Above all, I have been a sentient being, a thinking animal, on this beautiful planet, and that in itself has been an enormous privilege and adventure.
