The rain has finally stopped here in the midlands to be replaced by thick snow.0

I have been thinking for a long time that new houses need to be built on stilts in areas that flood. They do it in parts of Queensland but sometimes their floods have been so bad that the water has come above the stilts
If houses can't be built on stilts in a particular area then they should not be allowed to build.0 -
For anyone worried about flooding here are the FLOODLINE details
Flood Line contact Numbers
0345 988 1188
0845 988 1188
website is environment-agency.gov.uk
select 'flood' and search by postcode, town or river, expand map, switch to ordinance survey and check the contour lines He Who Knows looked up the how to and I'm posting his words . Hope that helps and will at least be able to either get you registered or put minds at rest, good luck, Lyn xxx.0 -
Words fail me on the men threatening about the dog ... and about the floods, especially about people who are *looking* at water covering the road in front of their house being almost completely left to their own devices, when the army is out a couple of miles away.
The cat debate is great! Its a real issue for cat owners, that I've already highlighted on my website, but some of these are new to me.
I'm starting to get a bit concerned about the situation in general, actually, especially in relation to food prices, and even security. Who'd have thought ...2023: the year I get to buy a car0 -
We did KARMACAT, we look ahead as a group and make our plans as much as anyone can under given circumstances. I've found in life along with many other of our little prepping band that the old saying about horses and water is oh so true when it comes to making other folks aware of potential happenings. Yes TPTB are sadly inertial and lacking in action in lots of cases, I do understand that there isn't a bottomless cash pit for them to draw from, but lots of what is happening could have been acted on much earlier in all this and that would have lessened the impact on peoples lives. However, the cavalry is NOT going to come galloping to the rescue just because we want it to and the only sensible course of action is to make plans yourself, and plans for if the plans you first make go awry, and then contingency plans to cover anything you can imagine too!!! No one else is going to do it for us, self help and action is the only way these days isn't it? Lyn xxx.0

If it were my cat, he'd be torn thru the mesh in no time
My mum's cat hurt her back a few months ago, and we had to keep her quiet and not able to jump for a few weeks (the cat, not my mum!). I went out and bought a foldable rabbit run, 1/2 inch mesh covered wooden farme. It's a meter or so square and 18ins high. plenty of space for a litter tray, rug, food and water and toys. She loved it, so I now have that in case. But it's heavy and bulky.

I found this. I wondered if it would do with some modifications and it could probably be fastened to a trolley in it's collapsed form. It would at least provide pacing room in an emergency evac. situation. It weighs 4kg.0

Downing street sits on Thorney marshes that lies between two branches of the the river Tyburn. So guess they will be protected at all costs.
I think that Nigel Farage is right to ask for some of the billions in foreign aid to be diverted to those affected by the flooding, but I can't see this government doing anything all they have done is talk but they have left people in dire straits for nearly a month :mad:Blessed are the cracked for they are the ones that let in the light

If houses can't be built on stilts in a particular area then they should not be allowed to build.
An interesting guy from the Geological Society was making the point that a lot of the houses near the rivers used to have basements that only stored coal! Now they are used as living accommodation.
In Bewdley nr Worcester a few new houses have been built not with stilts but with a space underneath that can be used as say a car port or storage. So the living accommodation is 10ft above water.
People need information/advice and to be frank I think a lot of MP's could learn a hell of a lot from this thread as could a lot of people.

I've got family in your part of the world Thriftwizard. You've got some fabulous place names
The road is slowly but surely disappearing outside my house. If I can still get out today I will, and pick up half a dozen extra sandbags just in case - I'll do the same every day I can get out, just to be on the safe side!
Good luck I hope you all get through without any problems. It's really easy to default to cynicism these days, since you are almost always certain to be right.0
