I'd like to see a world in which wasting food is regarded as abominable and something which mountains were moved to prevent happening. When you think of the joules' worth of energy represented by each morsel of food, and how much oil that represents, you'd shudder to be a waster.

I have now, thanks to you. Very interesting. They'd get my business if I was in Copenhagen.
Interesting that making meals from random stuff is a challenge to chefs but it's something which we home cooks are doing most days. I have a rather random selection of comestibles in fridge and freezer atm and have decided to hang fire on grocery shopping until I get this randomness cooked and eaten. It helps that it's a new month and I will be doing 'the accounts' which is posh-speak for totalling the grocery receipts and working out my other spends. This always focusses my thoughts.
Had a lie-in until 8.30 am this morning, almost unheard of. Will pootle the webs, run an errand then I intend to saddle the pashley and go *insert excited quivery voice* to the big archery shop. I'm on a legitimate errand to buy a couple of small things but I expect to lose a couple of hours in random sighing over archery equipment.
Tell ya, if you know anyone who is a gear nut, introduce them to archery as a hobby and they'll be happy for life. Poor, but happy.:rotfl:
Is anyone thinking of upping their preps of household supplies, both edible and other consumables, as a hedge against inflation? We've covered t.p. but what about others? I've got big stashes of bar soap and toothpaste, too.Every increased possession loads us with a new weariness.

Silly question time...........I live in Scotland and as you know we will be voting for independence or not, soon. There has been a lot mentioned about our money and how we may not be able to keep the pound ect.Because I am nervous about the banks,I have a stash of money at home, all scottish notes.would it be best to try and swap it for English notes?(we visit family a couple of times a year, could spend it then)or put it on giftcards. Will it become useless if we change currency?I know there might be a transition period but I don't trust banks or governments. The money is all declared but I don't like it in the bank because of what happened in Greese,ATM not working and banks telling us we can't have our hard earned cash unless we can prove what we want it for.I don't want to leave it to the last minute.Thanks0

I have too, but as this is Scotland and always wil be Scotland I think it would be wiser to hang onto our own money happydays. I don't see any hassle over sterling anyway I think that's politicians scare-mongering.0

Thanks Mardatha,I agree but I didn't think Mr Salmond would win such a large number of votes in the last elections, and a lot of people I know have said it would be good for Scotland,we would be like Norway.0 -

I'd be tempted to convert some of it to English banknotes - I can't see Salmond and co successfully closing the border, but I can see English businesses that are currently happy to accept Scottish notes becoming reluctant or refusing them.
I would not put any money on giftcards, these can become worthless in a number of circumstances.
If there is a yes vote, there are three currency options for Scotland, it negotiates to retain sterling, it joins the Euro or it has an independent currency - none of those options will be immediately apparent when the results of the vote are announced and there will be a transition period, IIRC March 2016 is proposed as Independence Day.
If I was North of the border, I'd be converting cash into supplies, much as I do anyway, I find it a better return on my investment than anything else I can do currently, if there's a no vote, then nothing happens, no harm done. If there's a a yes vote and Scotland looses Sterling then I expect prices to rise (its traditional just look at UK decimalisation, or the experience of most countries converting to Euros).0 -
Alec Salmond has always said it would be mad to close the border and he won't. I think there's an awful lot of hype and lies floating around so we just need to wait and see. I don't want to get into politics on here because on the discussion thread they got really nasty and racist and I'm not getting dragged into that stuff. We are preppers first and foremost in here0
