Remember the old army rule about toilet paper.

    Only use three squares.

One square for up and down, one square for side to side, and one square for polishing.
    :D

I thought you were going to say use both sides. :)

:) I may be custodian of a substantial part of the national pasta mountain range. Monte Penne, perhaps.

I'm down to my last 2-3 weeks' worth of HG potatoes and will thereafter be moving onto the pasta, tinned tatties and rice. These next few months until the next year's potato harvest will allow me to rotate stock.

Speaking of stock-cubes, craigw, I may just have quite a few of them as well. Good basis for a lot of things.

Had a minor hiccup to my day when arriving at the allotmentio, not seen it since Sunday last. Some villain had taken a crowbar or similar to my shed's door and prised the whole plank off the edge. But the lock which was on the cross-brace had held so the beggars didn't get in.

They'd done over most of my lottie neighbours, apart from one other shed where they'd tried and failed to get in. I called the Police and they attended and will step up patrols. Have mended my shed with the galv nails and the cheapy hammer (£land hammer) which live in the shed. Good to have them up there and ready or I'd've had to run home for them.

Glad you didn't have owt nicked GQ, nil ilegitimae carborundum, or words to that effect, kiddo.

Went to a garden centre today, crikey the price of seeds almost floored me, even basic herbs and salad stuff, got a packet of cress only cos I don't have any, but am going to peruse real seeds again - at least you can save their seeds for the future. One rhubarb crown for £2, and it was minute!! Some of the fancy seed spuds were 5 for £2 or more, don't think so, will hie me off the land of pound next week, I think. It makes you think when even growing a few fruit and veg is getting so dear - if one was of a cynical persuasion (perish the thought!) one might think TPTB were trying to remove even that small pleasure or way of making ends meet! Sorry, a couple or more glasses of rose has loosened my tongue a little, :D

Just spent 3 hours or more clearing up the kitchen after a totally unexpected (and scary) SHTF moment, and I really can't understand how it happened.

Yesterday I boiled a gammon joint and reserved the stock as I always do. Tonight I bought the stock to the boil intending to add pasta to make a sausage & herb pasta dish I have cooked numerous times before. Admittedly I've never used gammon stock to make it with but have always used gammon stock for soup etc with no problem whatsoever when reheating the stock on the hob. Tonight when I added the first handfull of pasta the stock exploded out of the saucepan with such force it hit the fridge on the opposite side of the kitchen (about 6 feet away), covered the whole hob, both work surfaces either side of the hob and made a huge puddle all over the floor . I only escaped injury because I saw the stock nearing the top of the pan so sidestepped as I turned the gas off. Every item on the worktop and shelves was covered in it (and I have lots of jars of food stuff in easy reach)

I am at a conplete loss how this could happen. I was using a deep pan only half full of stock and had only added one handfull of pasta. Any ideas? I'm still trembling now !

That's surely some kind of chemical reaction, taurusgb? Don't know the whys & wherefores but I might suspect some kind of yeast involvement, like when you open a bottle of HM ginger beer, which can be quite violent! The last two gammon stocks I've tried to re-use have fermented, one of them just overnight whilst it was cooling.

Happydays89, having done this many times, your new fruit bushes will fruit all the better in future if you don't let them bear any fruit this year; they'll put their resources into strong root & branch development instead of producing the end-product. Pick off any flowers that form this year & you'll have bumper crops next year & beyond!

Sorry to hear about the burglars GQ.

Is there any way you could increase your shed's protection? (Assuming there is anything in there worth going to such lengths for.)

If the burglars were able to see what is in there, they might come back another night with a bigger crowbar.

That's rotten luck Taurusgb and GreyQueen. Glad you both got your messes sorted with no harm to selves other than shock (though that is harm enough) and fury at having to clean up.

Have been thinking garden thoughts since being in the around a pound shops last week and being tempted by the seeds/spuds/sets etd. Currently staying in a place with a concreted yard, and not bothering with pots as I am not expecting to be here long. But I did find myself eyeing up some garlic stems and rhubarb shoots in the garden of a house I was viewing yesterday.....

Re GQ's stashes - I am low on everything at the moment other than jam jar lids..... I came across a too-good-to-ignore load of the larger ones that fit 'bonne maman' type jars this time last year, and bought too many to admit to (to my family anyway). Now I find myself obsessively collecting the jars to fit them..... at what point does a useful stash turn into a hoard ?
