I do think it is a problem that the way the system is now someone could get a council house (or more likely housing association house) big enough to fit their family, but not be expected to move once the kids have left home. If this encourages say singles or couples sat in 3 or 4 bed houses to exchange to smaller units it is a good thing. However it depends how you do it, just to throw a cut in across the board and let people sink or swim is very harsh. It should be more about getting people to engage in swaps from bigger houses to more suitable sized accomodation, start with the carrot, but give HB depts the stick to use if they have to.

Didn’t find anything in particular about the bread people and saw that brand in the shops here on hols so I suspect all is well in the mill of the kings

it saddens me that people get worried reading ‘this type of thing’, that is not the intention, it also saddens me that people run up debt that they can’t pay back or gamble money they can’t afford or marry people they don’t love. That’s why I don’t contribute to those threads, I just can’t bring myself to. I steer clear. I don’t seek those threads out.

It also saddens me of all the mentions of being reported – why on earth would anyone do that to you unless you are being racist or particularly bullying or doing something vastly against the grain of the site as a whole? Talk of this thread being childish is crazy when mentioned in the same regard as “reporting” which seems like schoolyard behaviour! I know I am silly, I know I am sarcastic, I know I am a complete fruit loop loon (for which I take medication prescribed by a psychiatrist and therefore no longer actually mad as the drugs DO work), but I am a kind person at heart and I like to think that this thread and all who contribute to it and the thread that got merged with it, actually helps in more ways than it could ever harm. What's the real problem with it? That's rhetorical by the way - please dont bother answering unless its structured and well thought out and not a personal attack attempting to shoot me or thread down in flames.

My advice to all those worried by any scenarios discussed here is to take whatever advice they see fit in terms of any preps they can do suitable to their own situation or ignore the whole thing. Many of the people on this thread take comfort in being able to discuss thoughts around potential social and economic problems.

For those who don’t like this thread, please don’t take this support away from those who DO benefit, just because a few people think it’s unrealistic. There is plenty of room for varied view points but blatant trolling and negativity is generally not what this part of the forum is about and I’d really like for it to remain that way.

Lots of good advice on here today, thank you Hunters for both posts, we dont mind how often people post ans you gave good information. If you work in fraud then you really know what goes on that we can only guess at - we would be shocked I imagine. As for fire the fear is always present isnt it and I agree don't stop for anything and get out fast.

I did a fire safety course at work some years ago and a good tip we were given is if you have a double glazing window and the opening is too small and you have something like a bay window roof to climb out onto smash the corner of the window first as this is the weakest part of DG.

I agree with the get out fast in a fire- even if you do get reported to the police for streaking 'cause the nearest phone is a paybox on the main road, :o seeing as that's what happened to my Uncle in the early 80's.

Also can I ask solid fuel/gas heating user's to think about getting a carbon monoxide detector please.

Worth noting on the thread too about the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning using camping stoves/heaters indoors. They are lethal (killers) if used inside a tent, or even at the doorway let alone inside a house.

    What does C.R.A.P R.O.L.L.Z mean?
I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer.
Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration.
I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over and through me. When it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path.
When the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.
  • D&DD the courgettes are more leathery than crispy, and are now discolouring (oxidising) - I think next time I would dip in lemon juice to stop them going brown. I will probably use them up soon to finish off the test. Luckily only one neighbour can squint through a fence if they really want to - but they will soon be seeing even more bizarre things! :D

Very good tips on fire up there.
Check the locks on your doors - two of my doors need keys but one is a yale lock (no key needed to get out) - guess which I'll aim for!
I suppose a fire proof safe would be sensible for all the documents, leaving myself and dog to get out.
Also, instead of fumbling about to find clothes or coats, you can always just take your duvet out... :)

Does anyone know if there's a number to ring the gas board(s) on to have them shut off gas to that house/street?

I would like to think I'd get the "attached" neighbour up and out, but I don't know if my mind would go blank.

Vanoonoo it actually really riled me that "we" had been reported. I don't understand the difference between this thread and e.g. the prep for winter thread ("buy this, make that, check this") or the hoarding thread (general chit chatty support and help). Trying very hard to hold my temper about it.

Right, I need a happy note to end on... er...!

Well the S has hit the fan in this house this weekend. Biff, our beautiful black labrador may have to be put to sleep on Monday. Last night his incontinence became worse, we had two loads in the kitchen in the space of three and half hours. We thought we were over the worst of it, but he then went again in his sleep. To look at him you would say he is old and doddery, but coping. To all intents and purposes he is, but the incontinence is difficult to deal with.

He is on tramadol and metacam which keeps him ticking over and allows him to walk without pain, but obviously with his back end in a bad way that also means that he is losing the ability to hold his poo and that is causing him to also feel bad about it. Although we don't go bananas with him, we put him outside then I set about clearing it all up and putting scented candles on, we know that we cannot go on for much longer either.

If you saw him down the field an hour aga you would think he didn't have a care in the world just ambling along, but we know that we are now on seriously big borrowed time with him. For a labrador to get to 14 years old, that is pretty good going but it is also going to be hard to make that decision and I cannot tell you how much I have cried today over it all. We are making the best out of it, but on the flip side I don't want to be selfish and keep him alive because I cannot bear to let him go.

Having animals brings so much joy, so much love and happiness and brings out the best in humans; but the pain of letting them go is beyond words!
