Happy New Year everyone - my resolution is a selfish one this year - to accept the new me and pace myself better, the aim being to put the brakes on my deteriorating health for as long as possible.
Mar I keep a paper accounts book - I favour a "rhino" analysis pad which I purchase every couple of years from amazon (it lasts me that long). Towards the end of each month I write all my proposed outgoings - these don't change much as I budget for everything, and also I write down my incomings (these vary a little but not much). Anything (hopefully) left over goes into my "bank" . I have categories for things like my share of the car maintenance, household maintenance etc, and I keep this money separately in my "bank" as it accrues, ready for use when I need it.
I take out my grocery/coal/window cleaner money each month and lodge it in my "bank", drawing it down weekly to my purse. Anything I don't spend is "spare" money which can be used for a treat or saved.
I have my tiny etsy store which I manage with paypal, using this money to fund my hobbies - if I want to purchase something in particular I wait until i've accrued enough money from sales to do so.
I don't have savings - we have a family dynamic whereby we invest in each other and are each other's insurance/back up.

That's close to how I do it, I get the cash out weekly, leaving in enough to cover the very few DDs we have. Then I set aside coal, elect and food in separate piles. I don't save either I just keep renewing and upgrading household stuff. Latest spend was upgrading all bulbs to LED, but this month I'll have dentist and optician bills coming in.0

Im still O/S regarding spread sheets despite being a shop manager for many years I got out just as technology entered the door. Hubby does wonders with spreadsheets but would prefer cricket league figures to food though he keeps a tight rein on banking and bills. I think I might work on it though and try a spread sheet but if the swearing level rises I will try paper and pen.
Fuddle and Bob that was really quick and funny - love it! My living room has been the same colour for about 10 years as I bought rather a lot of heritage paint at a knock down price and love it so much I kept it. reading room red at the bottom and cream above the rail (cant for the life of me think of the name of the rail - waist height so not Dado?) My cs suite goes perfectly with it - pure luck as Mum bought it and had it delivered. I like to keep it simple.
Off to check candle supplies and corral them all in one spot with the matches. Herded all the loo rolls together last night too, they do wander off especially as Oh is doing his model railway painting now replaced them with bits of old quilt cover - the painting rags not the ones in the loo IYKWIM :rotfl:Clearing the junk to travel light
Saving every single penny.
I will get my caravan0 -

Thank you so much for replying, going to look that up now badly in need of a dose of doom. Richard Preston's The Hot Zone was the best I've read so far.

GQ, the other day you mentioned your router is plugged in all the time. Do you like me still use a desktop computer rather than a laptop?
The reason I ask is that my modem gets its power from the USB cable. There is no need to plug it in, so it only consumes power when the computer is on. There are several for sale here:

It occurred to me this morning, that today is the fifth January 1st in a row, that I haven't paid for a TV Licence.
As a result, I have saved myself (and denied the BBC), the grand total of £724-50. :cool:0 -
