Just thought to add, this is where I harvest my free Kindle stuff: https://www.dailyfreebooks.co.uk. It can be sorted by type, or you can search by keyword, such as survival, prepping, garden etc. Just be careful if you subscribe to the email notification then open the emails you are sent a day late. If the book has come off promotion, you could end up happily clicking away and discover it's no longer free. (Ah, only me that daft, eh? :o Slinks off to blush all by herself... It was only one...)

Me too westcoastscot . I'm going to be kinder to myself and stick to it :)

Im after your help if you can preppers? I would like a torch that is small enough to fit on my keys but powerful enough to lead the way, find my car lock, enough to see addresses on my rounds and to enter exterior safe codes. I know it's a tall order but thought I'd ask. It basically has to fit in a fleece jacket pocket.
  • Well done

    It was actually no effort.

Within a fortnight of ditching it, I no longer even thought about watching TV.

A bit big for attaching to a bunch of keys, but plenty small enough for fitting into a jacket pocket, is the 9 LED torch they sell at £land.

For something to attach to a keyring, ALDI do a 2 pack of ultra-small Gigalite Keylight torches, for £3-99.

The downsides are, being so tiny, the lens is minute (only about 6mm in diameter), leading to a narrow beam, and the light only stays on, while you are holding the switch down.

For your purposes, I'd go for the 9 LED torch from £land.

GQ, the other day you mentioned your router is plugged in all the time. Do you like me still use a desktop computer rather than a laptop?

The reason I ask is that my modem gets its power from the USB cable. There is no need to plug it in, so it only consumes power when the computer is on. There are several for sale here:

:) Hi jk0, yes, still using a desktop PC, monstrous putty-coloured anti-theft device that it is. My router is plugged into the wall socket. It's one which can be set up to be wireless or wired; I have it on a cable (ethernet cable?) into the back of the PC tower.

Router has little green LEDS on it, all 5 lit when it's in use like now but the others. Can't imagine it's using much elastic trickery. Whole flat is only using 2 - 2.5 kWh daily.

:) Maglite Solitaire might be an option if you've a few more bob, fuddle. I frequently drop a large keyring which included one of those and it doesn't seem to take any harm.

I'm in a bit of a two-and-eight about a really big insect which appeared, apropros of nothing, on my sitting room floor. I have contained it under a drinks glass and am having the cold shudders in case it's a cockroach.

Have looked at various species of 'roach on the web and think it probably isn't but I'm keeping it imprisoned for the moment. It jumped up when I entrapped it, and has powerful rear legs, so I'm wondering if it's some species of cricket.

Never seen anything like this, indoors or out, but it did appear alongside a vase of pu55y-willow twiggy things (off the market) so I wondered if it could have possibly come out of them. They're now in the bin outside. I also had the kitchen window ajar as was cooking, and that's about 6 feet in a straight line from where it appeared so I guess it could have jumped or flown inside.

Haven't got a digi camera so can't send you a pic but it's got big eyes (not cute big eyes), is about an inch long, brown and can jump. Anybody got any clues as to what it might be? *shudders*

GQ what shape is the body - flatish and oval (like an almond)? or more roundish? Also, wings or no wings?
Sounds like a grass-hopper to me

:) Neither, really, it's oval when seen from above but quite chunky when seen from the side. It's a middling brown with a slightly-darker band the length of it's back, heavy duty "thighs" on its rearmost set of legs and two shortish prongs pointing backwards from the rear of the body. Antenna are long, but not the very long, backward sweeping ones you seem to get on cockroaches.

It's trapped under a large fluted-sided glass so I have to squint at it.

Any ideas, it's giving me the willies?
