    Happy New Year All!!
Just got in! Not from the night before unfortunately but at least we saw in the New Year!
Well its been hosing down and blowing a gale for most of the day. I was due to go hunting (traditional but not PC!)but decided that neither me or my beloved cob needed to risk our necks skidding around in the wet and mud, its dangerous enough in reasonable weather. Both my horse and the old pony a snuggled up in the stables for the night. Dont usually keep them in, they usually have a choice to stay out or shelter in with the stable door open. I'm now snuggled up on the sofa with the wood burner roaring and pulled the curtains as its so miserable outside. Only got to go out to put the ducks in as they dont seem to have the intelligence to go in on their own.

Great to see peoples new year resolutions prepping or otherwise. I too have learnt a lot from everyone as well as enjoying the banter and humour!

Just looking at my kindle and it seems to be all prepping, foraging, preserving and fiction concerning doomsday and post SHTF scenarios. Just struck me that if ever I lost it and someone read my contents list they would think me a right odd bod!!! On the subject of kindles I find it really usefull if people post freebies on Amaz*n, also any other fiction/non fiction SHTF books that I can look out for.

Anyway going to put the ducks in ,and ironically cooking one that I got reduced in Aldis! If I hadnt they would be looking nervous!! LOL

Keep safe and snuggled in this miserable weather, ELaine x

It occurred to me this morning, that today is the 5th January 1st in a row, that I haven't paid for a TV Licence.

As a result, I have saved myself (and denied the BBC), the grand total of £724-50.

:) Nice one! My hubby and I are hoping to give that up this year, just need a better set up for watching stuff online (think I spotted you on a tvlicence forum?).

GQ, the other day you mentioned your router is plugged in all the time. Do you like me still use a desktop computer rather than a laptop?

The reason I ask is that my modem gets its power from the USB cable. There is no need to plug it in, so it only consumes power when the computer is on. There are several for sale here:

    http://www.ebay.co.uk/bhp/speedtouch-330

My IT chappie who set up my computer for me recommends keeping the router on all the time, as it can affect the speed if it's turned on and off a lot.

But we have kindles and an ipad, so it needs to be on all the time anyway

I haven't had one for about 15 years now.

My brother left his kids with my last weekend and told me he'd put an emergency TV/DVD player in the garage in case they needed to watch Peppa Pig...

My niece asked for Beebies once, to be told by her older brother (3). 'Don't be silly, there's no TV here. Can we have a story?'

So they managed to survive the weekend without the electronic babysitter and slept a good two hours longer than normal.

Wind is howling here - can't light the fire as it smokes, and the board I've propped up between the fireplace and the guard to stop the draught keeps rattling. Two of my boundaries are streams, which are rather full and running very fast. And my drive (which has obviously been more compacted than the garden over the years) appears to be turning into a duckpond...

    Happy New Year!

    Happy New Year everyone

And thanks to whoever posted the link to the free ebook a couple of pages back. Led to me spending a happy hour downloading another ten books.

Torrential rain here - going to hibernate and think of some prepping resolutions for 2014.

Thanks to you all for making this thread such a fun and informative one.

Bluebag - second what you said about The Hot Zone. I read all sorts of supernatural horror - but that book actually scared me.

Thank you so much for replying, going to look that up now badly in need of a dose of doom. Richard Preston's The Hot Zone was the best I've read so far.

    Off to google......

It's nowhere near as good at The Hot Zone, sadly, but I still have 33% left to read in which it *could* wow me. While I was purging the bookshelves, I found my copy of Laurie Garrett's The Coming Plague which is a great non-fiction alternative. It's been out a while now, so may not be completely up to date, but it's still way scary!

Yeah, that's what Orange tried to tell me also. However, my sat nav updated its maps at 8 megabits for hours yesterday which is the maximum speed of a Speedtouch.

Unless, of course, you are also using WiFi devices with it.

Speedtouch doesn't work with WiFi. It is solely a wired modem. (Not a router.)
