Struggling to stay awake here for the inevitable call from my DDs who are at the elder's house with a couple of friends. I declined their invitation, have enjoyed a sofa evening with the last of the Christmas pudding.

I got a new duvet in October using Mr T's double-up promotion, and it's on the bed for tonight. I've had the old one well over ten years, will wash it and keep as a spare. I've been putting off opening it, silly feeling it's too nice to use. All my sheets are CS or from my late mum's linen stash, I'm so out of the habit of buying new.

An unexpected dilemma is that I have £50 in John Lew1s vouchers and I can't decide what to get with them. Maybe a new pillow, the firm Dunlopillows I've had for 20 years are crazy prices now... or one of the combined radio/chargers that have been recommended here.

Socks? - I do need socks. A Waitr0se grocery shop?

Hoping 2014 will be a year of serenity, and free from fear - good health, kindness, wisdom and peace, things money can't buy.

    Hi Twiglet,

A happy and healthy new year to you. Can I make a suggestion which will sound very non-MSE for the John Lewis voucher.

My daughter had a Joe Malone diffuser in her kitchen (huge space) and every time I walked in I was uplifted by the scent. I mentioned at the time I would love one for Christmas. And that is exactly what I got! I am absolutely delighted with it and every time I walk into my own sitting room now I am reminded of my daughter and the kindness (and huge extravagence) of her gift. Sometimes we just need to treat ourselves and think out of the 'box' and I know damn fine that the next £50 John Lewis voucher I get will be earmarked for a repeat performance next year.

Happy New Year everyone! Thank you all for all your posts, I have learnt so much from guys.

We are just back from the beach - just two of my girls and one of their friends. My eldest two went out. The beach was brilliant and we had great fun trying to beat the sea whilst writing in the sand, then realising it wouldn't show up in a picture so another mad rush to fill the words with the white pebbles so the camera could see it. We won! Then back to the car for a flask of hot chocolate and well wishing to all before heading home and to the rain. A cheap but memorable new year.

I had a lovely time last night; my eyes were playing up with this blepharits & muvva's done something to her hip, so we were tucked up & dozing by 9:30 :D
When it suits she has the ears of a bat, so heard "may be some thunder" & started covering mirrors with table cloths! The fact that said forecast was for several hundred miles away was of no consequence, so I reckoned I'd better stay here the night to give her a little peace of mind (Mum is reduced to a quivering wreak by the very mention of the T word, bless her :/ )

We had a little tipple by sharing from a bottle of a rather nice fruity red, then she retired to her wordsearch & I to my sudoku. On reflection I feel we made the right decision as tea seems to head south as it were, quicker than the half pint of berry-flavoured squash, so I only had to visit the little girls room after being woken by The Offspring calling my mow-bill-aye at midnight!

Morning all, and a Happy New Preptastic Year to you all! Happy bunny here; we spent a pleasant evening playing daft games with a handful of family, friends & neighbours (no-one's going to have a massive hangover today but we all had genuine smiles on our faces - it seems uni students are deeply into games at the moment!) and today is a quilting day, so who cares if it's miserable out there! My fabric's all cut & placed & pinned into strips & blocks ready to roll, so wish me luck - it's the first time I've attempted a full king-size quilt.

And yes, a big thank you to you all for all the ideas & inspiration I get from all of you here on this thread. Always something new to think about, or a new perspective on something I hadn't really thought through before. And plenty of belly-laughs along the way too!

We stayed in last night... the days of going out and partying till silly o'clock on NYE are well gone..Just got the panic and stress of the kids being out, and waiting for them to come home...

Hopefully making good use of today, by doing a load of cooking/baking...

Happy New Year to all, with wealth, health and happiness all round.

I enjoyed last night, but it went on too long, didn't get home till 2am, I felt ill with tiredness - so next time, if I *do* go out, I'll make my own way home by public transport, even if it means I have to leave before midnight.

I want to thank everyone on here for the comradeship of the like-minded - to know that there's plenty of people who think the same way I do, even about comparatively minor things like going out on NYE, let alone things like prepping, is priceless.
