Meanwhile we are all hoping it stays quiet and peaceful till all the tourists have left....I actually think it will so they have plenty of time to sip their gin and tonics and soak in the sun. There are currently no travel warnings out for travel to Greece...I guess they all need the money and don't want to panic anyone into cancelling their hols.......
I think I would rather be prepared just in case. How about you , would you rather not know and continue your holiday clueless as to what is going on...or would you rather carry your prep mentality on holiday with you?
on a positive note, just ordered two pairs of distance glasses online and got both (different frames) for 28 pounds delivered ...how about that for good value? I got prescription sunglasses from them before the summer and they are fantastic........having them delivered to my MIL address in the UK..just in case....“The superior man, when resting in safety, does not forget that danger may come. You know a few of us have been critical that the media is ignoring some stories, even in the UK regarding what is happening regarding the cost of living, changes in the benefit system, low wages etc...but what is happening in Greece and some of what 2 Tonsils mentions may be the real reason why they are keeping quiet and saying as little as possible.
Because in the end they think the public will be calmer not knowing what's really going on. Keeping us in the dark.
Perhaps in reality we are more in a 1929 Wall Street Crash type of scenario..."A government afraid of its citizens is a Democracy. Citizens afraid of government is tyranny!" ~Thomas Jefferson

We are only 3km from Albania across a sea channel. An hours ferry ride from Igoumenitsa on the mainland and a one hour flight from Athens. It takes about 10 hours on the ferry to Bari, 8 to Brindisi and a casual 24 hours to Venice.
Making a few plans and getting things sorted out just in case. Meanwhile I will carry on as normal...smile for the tourists, train hard at the gym and enjoy my birthday on Friday! 57!!!!!! ....happily too old to be conscripted into the Greek army LOL...although I am probably fitter than most of them.....“The superior man, when resting in safety, does not forget that danger may come. I think so too...its a matter of who crashes first in my opinion, and I don't actually think it is going to be Greece. It's true most are kept in the dark...and obviously they don't want people in a panic cancelling holidays here as the Greeks need all the income they can scrape together.
It's just that I like to err on the side of caution and its not looking good to me. I did a poll of my friends on the underground sites and they are of the same opinion.
Still the season for tourism ends here soon so the truth may come out when its finished...unless of course the SHTF sooner ....
Meanwhile we seem to be back in heatwave mode and its 25 in the front room with the fan on and the windows open at eleven pm! My summer clothes will be staying on for a while longer.
Of course I will keep you updated...this thread is likely to turn into a truthful version of the nine o clock news any day now! I always wanted to be a news reader like Angela Ripon!:D“The superior man, when resting in safety, does not forget that danger may come. I heartily agree Pops, there could well be another crash and as the domesday prepper said last week it will all hit the fan in a matter of hours.
I have long believed in times of crisis our government distract us with other issues like the Poll Tax, which stopped us all noticing what they were quietly doing in the background. Am waiting to see what they come up with this time or maybe the benefits threats/bedroom tax is doing that already. i dont think I am being cynical just realistic.Clearing the junk to travel light

I tend to go on holidays of a practical nature as I can't do beach breaks (redheaded and burn badly in 10 mins even in UK) plus sitting still bores me witless).
Ever since a young child, I have detested footwear that I couldn't run in, if necessary. I like to feel grounded. Sometimes holidaymakers have ended up having to walk a few miles from resort to airport, and you see them struggling along in flip-flops with heavy luggage. I like to travel light and I like to have everything essential to survival in my pockets.
I've travelled long-haul when you haven't even seen your luggage for 30 hours, and are on the opposite side of the planet from your friends and family, you want to feel self-reliant, just in case you're in NZ and your backpack in in Kuala Lumpar.
I also read a very interesting book about disaster survival and it was pointed out that air-crashes are mostly survivable, as in 70% of passengers will survive the impact. And then you will be walking to safety through broken glass and flames, and would you really want to be doing that in flip-flops or stilettoes?
I last flew 2 years ago, to a European destination on a British budget airline. As I'd been awake 24 hours and done a day's work and a night's bus travel before the flight, so once we were aboard about 9 am, I put on my eyemask and settled down to rest. After about 30 mins, my companion nudged me and whispered that we were flying around in circles. She'd noticed the position of the sun and that we weren't high enough.
Shortly after that, the pilot announced that we had a problem with the hydraulics and were going to be landing back at Gatwick. We'd been flying in circles over southern England to burn off some of our fuel.
We came down smoothly enough and as I looked out across the wing, I could see fire-engines and emergency cars screaming down the runway on either side of the plane, and as we taxi'd around a curve, could see that we had them in front and behind us, too. What kinda lunatic drives down a runway with a 727 coming in to land behind them?!
They then told us the outside of the plane had to be checked for fires and until it was, we couldn't taxi into the terminal. Because we weren't supposed to be there it took ages to get an airbridge to us and I was a little stressed as I could smell the leaking kerosene from the nearest engine..........
High on my ambitions for this life is never appearing on the 9 O'Clock News as a featurette in an accident. But stuff happens. And we were airside for 6 more hours with only our hand luggage and what we stood up in. I had my meds and some grub and something to read and my pal to talk to........all could have been a rather different story as with a friend's step-mum who was on the plane which caught fire at Manchester airport years ago where people died. She escaped but can't be persuaded to fly again for love nor money and I don't blame her.Every increased possession loads us with a new weariness.

I my be biased but I think a lot of us are talking a great deal of sense and it is not a case of seeing it as a conspiracy. This I really think is a possibility.
Its all spin and polish, I did not follow the Olympics and for those who did and enjoyed them, fine but though I doubt originally this was the purpose for having them, they gave the media and Government plenty of chance to use them as a distraction...and a few bad news stories were being released at the time...
And being missed. Now, if the stories do get mentioned they cannot hide them so the next best thing is to try and say nothing at all..."A government afraid of its citizens is a Democracy. Citizens afraid of government is tyranny!" ~Thomas Jefferson

Dazi, most of the time the thread is for what you say and we on the whole could not be any more OS than anyone else and most of us do our OS lifestyle not for an emergency, just to keep our heads above water in difficult times...
I don't see this as a conspiracy. But I won't be flaming you as you put it and your opinion is as valid as the next...
The clue of course is in the title of the thread..."A government afraid of its citizens is a Democracy. Citizens afraid of government is tyranny!" ~Thomas Jefferson
