Ginny I bought one of those red carbolic soap bars from Beamish over a year ago and it is still going strong, I just carve off some flakes, literally as the knife goes through it turns to flakes which are perfect for dissolving for hand washing anything that needs stains removing, very effective and I love the smell of it! Not worked out yet how to get a slab cut off, maybe use the cheesecutter (wherever that is these days! lol)Our days are happier when we give people a bit of our heart rather than a piece of our mind.

I'm well-stocked but will be near a 99p Store a bit later this aft and may just get in before closing time. Ta.
I'm always grinning when I read old-style homemaking manuals, such as things from the late 19th-early 20th century. Bygorry, if you wandered into the pharmacy and started asking for some of this lot, I reckon the cashier would keep you yakking while someone behind the scenes phoned the anti-terrorist police.
I agree wholeheartedly that TPTB would love nothing more than to set the population squabbling and sneering among ourselves whilst they concentrate on robbing us blind. We must resist, even if I have to bite my lip when my auntie (early seventies, full time housewife post-marriage) crows delightedly that they've never been so well-off in their lives.
We're having a few ructions with the public due to a change in policy caused by the multi-million pound cutbacks from central to local government. Decisions have been made that certain services which automatically had a pensioner concession will only be offered at the reduced rate to pensioners in receipt of low-income benefits. Not going down overly well with some customers, but many come around if you explain respectfully why it's being done. If we identify people we think should be eligible for benefits who aren't getting them, we'll always try to get them to make a claim. The trouble with any form of means-tested benefit is that there will always be those who are disqualified by a whisker and have to pay full-whack.
Of course, a lot of pensioners are involved in distributing their wealth anyway as they assist the younger generations of their own families.
Righty, off to see mah GP to get some results (routine, nowt serious) then a quick flip by the shops if I can get in before they close. Laters, GQ xxEvery increased possession loads us with a new weariness.

Just picked up a collapsible LED lantern from the 99p store.
Contains 11 LEDs, and works off 4xAA batteries.
Seems quite bright, but I'll know more when it gets dark, and I can try it out properly.0 -
............... and most stores (including the pound ones) are reducing/removing their stocks of camping type stuff, why are Aldi stocking even more :huh:0

good afternoon just having a coffee on my local precinct and table gave way flinging it across the cafe.....the leg had gone.... they gave me a fresh one to take home...... looking forward to relaxing next week or so , much needed annual leave ...... my dad phoned me Saturday night , saying blood was spraying from his leg, only stopped it with the aid of some kind of gaffer tape.... nearly rang for ambulance... he then told me hed been taking paracetamol on a daily basis.... but i thought it was aspirin that was a blood thinner? ive advised him to go to doctors but hes reluctant, he takes painkillers for joint pain... is ibu profen a blood thinner? preferable after food to avoid ulcers .... off to ikea tomorrow for a sunnan lamp0

:eek:OMG, daz, what a fright. Your poor Dad.......
I take soluable asprin (prescribed to thin my blood after a mini-stroke) but I don't think you should be taking anything that regularly without medical advice. Everything has contra-indications and even OTC medications can have nasty interactions with other conditions. Please try to get your father to see his GP soon as (and I know what stubborn old Dads can be like, too).
GP pleased with my progress. After nearly 2 years on iron tablets I now have a haemoglobin count of 14.2. Much improved on the measly 9 I used to have. Yayyyyyy! Ferratin still pretty low at 49 tho, in the lowest part of the normal range (upper normal being 500). I'm to be tested again in 6 months.
Didn't make it to the shops as got seen late but will try again tomorrow. Look forward to Bob's report on the efficiency of the LED lamp.
Yup, MrsLW, we are in interesting times indeed, and not in a good way, I fear. I'm keeping my eyes and ears open and hoping to stay one jump ahead of the trouble which I feel is incoming. Mostly financial, I suspect, but we are creatures of finance as well as flesh and blood.Every increased possession loads us with a new weariness.

Having trouble keeping up on here these days. Had to take a break as so much going on around me with family, finances and health issues.
I have been trying to keep up with the alternative news sites and find so much that worries me. Not just because of the impacts it will/may have on ourselves, but now becauseI'm on the verge of becoming a step nanny. As we await the call from the hospital to confirm labour has started I can't help but worry about the little ones future. Both OH and I were discussing how we were glad to have been born in the early 60s (the 50s would have been better but hey ho). Our parents have enjoyed a much better standard of living than we will ever achieve and our lives are so different to the expectations we had in our 20s. That said I have few regrets andhave always tried to do the best in what ever situation I find myself and believe optimism and being adaptable are key and the life skills passed on from parents and grandparents of course. I have very few regrets. I believe it is far more important to create memories than obtain materialistic stuff I don't need. I blew a substantial amount of money on travelling when I was younger following a couple of near death events. I figured that new this and that could be repossessed or lost, but my memories would last a lifetime. I was lucky enough to travel to Japan, Australia, Canada and the States as well as throughout Europe. I am content now and enjoy and appreciate the little things so much more. Haven't had a holiday for 15 years. I am grateful to have lived life prior to mobiles, computers and colour tv etc and worry so much more about how the young ones will cope as life becomes harder and tougher. There are times when I wish I wasn't as informed and inquisitive, it seems to be as much a cause of anxiety as a help at times.
It is annoying when I hear my parents generation judging and complaining about my own and then I find myself occassionally doing the same. My parents were not well off just hard working, careful and resourceful. They did however have theability to improve their living standards far more than I am likely to. Our holidays were either walking and climbing in the lakes or touring through Europe for 4/5 weeks with a caravan or tent. To keep costs down we'd take so much food and supplies with us that I know we were over the reccommended axle weight at times. It wasn't until I got older l realised how lucky I'd been to have such wonderful and educational experiences. Although as kids we craved the seaside dad wanted culture and scenery so thats what we got. I still remember the history lesson about the start of WW1 as we stood on the bridge at Sarajevo. In France we travelled and learnt about the resistance and WW2. We'd miss the last few weeks of the summer term, but our holidays taught us far more than being at school and I have all the wonderful memories. Perhaps this is why I have an insatiable appetite for knowledge and understanding of things and drive people mad with so many questions at times.
I look back and compare my life to that of my parents and I will never have the same standard of living as they enjoyed during the 70s to 90s at my age. Maybe if I won the lottery perhaps. Having said that the I am surrounded by secondhand,I am warm and have a roof over my head. I use my life skills to make the best of every situation and shop carefully and we eat well. My one wish would be to have enough money to reduce the fear of if this or that breaks down or needs replacing. I am obsessed with shopping and getting the best deal or being able to take advantage when amazing bargains present. Like seeing a quality kettle too cheap to ignore and buying it. When our old kettle died a month later we were prepared. I like to stay ahead of the game and thats how I view life. You have to stay alert to everything around you and everything that may influence and affect you. Trying to stay one step ahead all the time is hard, but also rewarding. Although just occassionally it would be nice to go shopping and buy something on impulse without having to do the sums and have a mental discussion etc.
:mad:As TPTB move the pension goal posts I doubt many will collect a state pension. Although Logans run was fiction so was 1984. I have read about eugenics and it's a worrying topic. We are ruled more by corporations and pharmas than the puppet politicians. Most cheap and free fuel ideas and inventions appear to be bought and buried by those that rely on our consumption of oil. I am sure that many cures have been found and kept quiet by those that stand to profit by treatment of cancer and other disease and ailments. Natural cures and remedies are often discredited possibly because the pharmas cannot control and profit from them.
Everyday products now contain what was once deemed as waste from industry such as SLS in toiletries once an industrial cleaner ! Fluoride which is added to our water and toothpaste. Our lives are so full of toxic chemicals and additives along with the constant message to use anti bacterial this and that. Whilst my parents and grandparents generation may have lived longer than their predecessors I fear us and those that follow may not. With the amount of additives, chemicals and toxins about today along with an indoor lifestyle and compromised immune systems the numbers lucky enough to make their pensions may be considerably reduced .
As DSD has just moved into new house we have helped with practical stuff as much as baby stuff and tried to encourage her to prep for things like no water or electric or heating. Bad weather and running out of essentials etc. We've had the conversations “what would you do if” and tried to encourage her to prep accordingly. We have got her a corded phone and wind up headtorch amongst other stuff , but I'm sure she thinks we are fussing. I've tried to encourage her to have an emergency standby food box that is replenished when ever she has to raid it and to have some bottled water stored.
Fuddle, like your list, what about lentils as a substitute for minced beef dishes. Another thing I would add is honey.
With life so hectic recently my preps are all over the place and I need to take stock and organise stuff or should the shtf I will be running around the house like a headless chicken.
My birthday is a week away and I'm hoping to get a kelly Kettle or such like. I really want stainless steel and any recommendations as to the ideal size and where best to get one would be great.
Next year is a significant one and I've no idea how I will celebrate it. Hopefully just me and OH creating wonderful lasting memories, thats all I ask for.0
