Maybe a plain unscented soap, never looked at the ingredients tho,

I used fAIry household soap all my life but they stopped making it now, using a palm of the olive soap at the mo, tried the hot flannel olive oil thing but couldn't get on with it, old habits being hard to break and all that.
I still have one, but you can buy household soap from here
    http://www.carbolicsoap.com/bar-soaps/household-soap?limit=all
You can also get Reckitts blue from there as well :D

Boots and Wilko do their own brand of laundry soap.

The trouble is that the EU dictatorship has banned carbolic use in household soaps.

  • Oh dear I,m starting to feel very guilty about being a pensioner and receiving state pension of which I am grateful. But truly I do not own my own home and have worked almost all of my life from the age of 15. Admittedly some times part time and sometimes time off when I had my children. I,m now wondering if the government are going to kill us all off at a certain age to save on state pension.
I think that it is far more likely that they will keep raising the retirement age, in the hope that we will all peg it before we get to claim

Oh I agree. I think by the time I retire I shall be 72. I prey I will have the health to allow me to do so. With creaky joints at 34, rheumatoid and osteoarthritis in my family I'm scared alright.
  • FIFTYEIGHTER you shouldn't feel guilty about taking a pension, you've worked when you were able, done the childrearing and done the best you can in your life. You've paid in to the system and to take your pension is sensible. It isn't a huge amount of money and no one of us will be living a life of luxury at the states expense, we've all got to do the best with what we've got pet, so no guilt, life without the pension would be very hard indeed and unless they reintroduce workhouses many older folks would be in very dire straits indeed, Lyn xxx.

Were they the same ones who said the general public were too stupid to use borax in a home setting?

In the States, I'd make homemade laundry powder. Borax, grated soap (usually fels naptha, wonderful smell), and washing soda. 1:1:1 ratio (1 bar soap). I can order borax online, but I don't want to government to start knocking! And lets face it, the borax 'substitute' is poo.

Can't wait to see what they will try doing once I start ordering sodium hydroxide crystals for my soap making. :rotfl:

  • Carbolic Acid is an excellent disinfectant.

Just be careful to keep it away from puss1es.

By that, I don't mean don't drop it in the bath. :p

Butterfly, thank you for the link. I saw a bar of the carbolic at Beamish in the gift shop and it was £8, thought it was still a bargain when you think of how big the bars are but they are much cheaper on that site. I think I may well order some as it would be very useful, thank you for the reminder I wont use it for cleaning the cat *cough *

I would buy it from someone like B&Q or Robert Dyas as the Royal Mail won't deliver it as it is a prohibited substance. Other couriers won't carry it either.
