I would buy it from someone like B&Q or Robert Dyas as the Royal Mail won't deliver it as it is a prohibited substance. Other couriers won't carry it either.

Who carries it when it's ordered from Amazon then?

Caustic Soda is available from the pound and 99p shops.

Not in the quantity I'd need. Maybe to start out with though.

I personally have never envied any other generation, I dont think x generation were lucky or y generation were unlucky. I think we all just grow up and get on with it. But I do often thank fate that I wasn't born in the WW1 generation because I think they were well and truly scuppered.

Ah GQ that was hilarious but so very true.

I may have convinced the Hubby that getting me a kelly kettle is a great idea. He has had a chuckle and shaken his head at my wishlist though. The middle daughter just turned to me and asked if it is all for the zombie apocalypse (she is the Walking Dead fan (with me)). She reckons it's all a great idea hehe. She also would never mention it to anyone else as a) that would make me weird which is never a good thing in a mother apparently, and b) while we watched Blackout I pointed out that the 'prepper' guy made a very basic mistake in telling folks he was prepared and that that contributed to his downfall.

Let's hope you don't need an MRI scan any time soon.

The moment they turned it on, you would be shot out like a cannon ball. :D
Look forward to Bob's report on the efficiency of the LED lamp.

Just tried it out, and it's pretty good.

Not sure one would be bright enough for a family filled living room, but placed on a coffee table you are sitting by, I think it would be OK.

I could easily read standard sized text, at about 2' away from the lamp.

When I've got time, I'll do a battery life test.

If anyone has a BB as part of their preps, what will you be using to hold the pot/ billy can above it?

I carry spirit stoves, which don't require a separate pot stand.

Indeed, they work best, when the centre hole is closed off by the cooking vessel.
  • Just picked up a King Size, 15 TOG duvet, from Asda.

Although I only have a double bed, I got a King Size one for two reasons.

    1. It'll hang further down the sides of the bed, hence less likely to let the heat out, when I turn over.

    2. They only had Single and King Size, and a Single isn't much use on a double bed.

:T Now, I just had a random thought; I have made 2 buddy burners and haven't yet deployed them as haven't got a pan support. Would anyone know what would happen if you put a buddy burner into the firepan of a KK and lit it? I assume a good fast boil and then the BB could be extinguished with a metal plate or summat? Anyone tried this?

I might have to have a go at the weekend on the lottie. Purely in the interests of science, y'unnerstand.

GQ - this was in the Tightwad Gazette. She made buddy burners by tightly packing a spiral of corrugated cardboard in a tuna can and then adding paraffin. She used an large empty coffee tin with an aperature cut out on one side and some holes punched the opposite for airflow to place on top and was able to boil a kettle heat a pan by placing them on the top - iyswim

We love our Kelly Kettle, we have the aluminium base camp one, DH wanted the steel one but the Ali is lighter and boils faster. He still reckons we should have got the steel but is still very happy with our one.
DH has a bag of applewood clippings gleaned from work (gardener) that he dried out and keeps for KK fuel. Pine cones work well too, dry well and burn well.
We use ours daily when camping, even to boil water to wash up with and DH just keeps refilling and reboiling it. Constant hot water! (Ok so the caravan actually has a water heater and taps but I like to play camp).
