Any ideas for preserving eating apples (probably Gala) other than freezing juice? They are VERY sweet. If I don't come up with something soon I'll have to offer them to Mrs LW for cider-making...

Just bought one of these, from my local market.

    Not a box of 12. Just 1 lamp. :D

Anyway, it consists of a 30 LED inspection lamp on the side, and a 7 LED torch on the end, with a hanging hook and magnet.

The inspection lamp and torch can be used separately, or together.

Possibly not ideal for a BOB, as it's fairly heavy (4.6oz sans batteries), is quite bulky (approx 8"x2"x1.75") and requires 3 AA batteries.

With a set of batteries installed, it tips the scale at 6.5oz

However, as an emergency lamp around the house (or in the glove box), I think it'd be very useful.

Busy doing up the cottage with a view to selling. Loads of reasons - partly financial but also it sometimes feels like this place could star in a scene from Deliverance . Small 'self contained' communities may be supportive but they also have their drawbacks. So I need either a place on its ownsome or even somewhere in a smallish rural/semi rural town - there's a lot to be said for anonymity..
But my refuges of choice all come with a hefty price tag! Best get on with the TV competitions or buy a lottery ticket then.. :(

Strangely enough I have been looking for a mouli as tried making fruit "cheese" like that with a sieve. But it was hard work and I am sure I got a lot less out of the fruit than I could have. Mind you the chickens enjoyed the leftover bits as a fruity treat lol.

Might try freegle first to see if someone has an old mouli stuck in a cupboard somewhere.

Trying to avoid putting the gas on like pretty much ev1 in the country no doubt. Had a couple of really cold mornings so put the heat on when I got up for 30-40 mins for the kids getting up. But trying not to put it on any other time.

Sat here with a blanket over my knees lol.

I was thinking, surely this is a self defeating cycle. The companies put the price up, so we all cut down on usage so they get less income so the greedy sods put the price up again.

If just one stood out and said actually we are already making a profit so will be the only one NOT to increase prices they may well find a goodly chunk of people moving across to them. But there just doesn't seem to be any competition or any chance they won't all just follow on blindly from each other.

The US politicians are still arguing and brandishing sticks at each other over the budget/debt ceiling. I wonder who will blink first.

I know many people think they won't dare push the country into default, but if they are anything like our politicians they are rich and so far out of touch that maybe, just maybe they think they can do it without crashing the whole economy.

We keep getting encouraged to move suppliers but what are we moving to? Because they all play catch up with each other. :(
My current supplier isn't too bad but I'm coming to the end of an energy deal and as ever what I get is an estimate of comparative cost. What I would like, thank you very much, is a simple unit cost - together with any caveats, standing charges etc but so many suppliers prefer to couch their quotes in terms of average annual charges based on high, medium or low use. Are you listening Scottish Power? Does my head in!

Just come back from the doctors as have been ill. Felt fluey/virusey for the first week, then a little better, but this last few days worse and today struggling more and more with my breathing-I have asthma.

Didn't realise how low my peak flow was until I tried to do the reading at the doctors. He has told me not to be afraid to increase the level of my inhalers I use-he has told me the max I can use and its a lot more than I thought tbh. He has also given me antibiotics and some quite strong steroid pills.

Makes you realise how quickly you can worsen as well as if you have an existing condition how much we rely on the regular drugs/treatment we get.

Trouble is when my chest is tight like this the doctor says I need to avoid cold air and keep the house warm. So tbh me wrapping up won't cut it as the air stays cold.

At the mo the house has warmed up a bit-some sun outside and clouds and 4 kids running around. But think I will have to bite the bullet and have the heat on this evening, when I probably would just have got out the blankets.

  • Just been reveiwing a few of the books on the urban survival website, linked to be Butterfly Brain,

There's one suggestion, in Mini Urban Survival Kit, which I certainly don't agree with.

The author suggests including a "sardine can type/size survival kit" in the pouch.

Given the whole point of a sardine can type/size survival kit, is that it stays with you, even if everything else is lost/beyond reach, I would suggest keeping it separate from all other kit.

Mine (even though it is a bit bigger than a sardine can), lives in the breast pocket of my coat.

The only time it ever comes out of the pocket, is when the coat is being washed, or when the weather is too hot for a coat, in which case it goes straight into my trouser pocket.

I never leave home without it.
