thriftwizard wrote: »Craigywv, this recipe is brilliant for using up vats of apples without too much work. Delicious on toast, in porridge or even in little tarts, it tastes like mincemeat without the bits. Very autumnal/Christmassy, no fat whatsoever & only half the amount of sugar that jam would have. I've just made (another) 15 jars...
PS - I use a mouli to puree it, and recycled jam jars. And this time I've used a mixture of small, fairly bland wild apples, some from our big Blenheim Orange tree, and a handful of crab apples & a few Japonica quinces. Yum, if I say it myself.
Hi, love the sound of the apple butter, but I don't have mouli or that cone shaped sieve,, would a normal sieve Work? Or I have a potato ricer:)today's mood is brought to you by coffee, lack of sleep and idiots.

Morning all.
Hester, a pal who has 30 + years of childmindng experience, inc essentially raising several children from birth to adulthood for most of the day, still shivers when she recalls one of her former charges.
At less than 3 years old, this boy had both his parents living in fear of him, and hatched and executed a plan across a span of several weeks which was very deliberately designed to kill his hated baby sibling. That it wasn't successful was due to the chance intevention of an adult at the critical moment.
Sometimes, you feel like running for the hills, don't you?
Went to visit a pal last night and was raving about what fun archery is and almost got accused of being a prepper (the zombie apocalypse was mentioned, lol). I hastily derailed that one, explaining that finally taking up archery was something I'd been meaning to do since I was a kid - which is perfectly true. Not that I don't trust my pal, but they might make my business the subject of social chitchat and they know a lot of people.
Occurred to me that I ought to Keep Mum, socially, about this pastime. And about my eventual intention to take up shooting with the same outfit.
Anyone else have pefectly-legal but unusual hobbies which could be handy SHTF but they feel are better not out in the public domain?Every increased possession loads us with a new weariness.

Winter is here chez WCS - 1.5 degrees C and the car frozen over!! bbrrrr!!0

Cool & breezy here; the heating has finally kicked in & the feral cat is waiting by the door - she hovers out there, obviously dying to get in, but when you open it she doesn't know what to do with herself & terror gets the better of her! It's only a matter of time...
A child I looked after for a time seemed to be destined for serial killerhood; she squeezed a baby rabbit to death (not here, I wouldn't have let a small child handle them) drowned two guinea pigs & nearly drowned two chickens (giving them a "bath") and I watched her stalk & attempt to kick one of my bantams, after being warned not to. I stepped in & stopped her, and never let her be around animals unattended after that, but her mother was very ill & couldn't supervise her 24/7. However she has grown up into a delightful & helpful teenager, who seems genuinely concerned & caring & gives 110%, so maybe kids who seem to be born to hang when small can be turned around.
PS - Cornishchick, a sieve would work just fine but might be very hard work! A ricer would be easier, or a food processor if you have one. But a mouli is a very appropriate bit of non-electric technology to invest in - and the older, the better; modern ones are very lightweight (in processing terms, rather than actual weight) compared to my very ancient one!Angie - GC Jul 25: £225.85/£500 : 2025 Fashion on the Ration Challenge: 26/68: (Money's just a substitute for time & talent...)0 -

GQ my hobby is certainly legal but unusual and I used to keep it quiet.. Not sure if it would be useful after the SHTF - but it might help me to see when it's likely to happen.. :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:0

I've got aan old Mouli Legumes sieve which is very useful and would be even more so if the leccie was intermittent as I make a lot of soups. The other thing I have which is super useful is a Mouli Julienne shredder. It would make for less cooking time for soups and casseroles if I was having to cook over open fires as it shreds quite finely. It would certainly save a lot of preparation time as most things would only need a wash and not peeling and chopping afterwards. Another useful gadget is my manual coffee grinder which could be used for grains and beans if needed, not just coffee. I'm going to try to think of other uses for my existing equipment and see what I can come up with that is useful, Cheers Lyn xxx.0
