Craigywv, this recipe is brilliant for using up vats of apples without too much work. Delicious on toast, in porridge or even in little tarts, it tastes like mincemeat without the bits. Very autumnal/Christmassy, no fat whatsoever & only half the amount of sugar that jam would have. I've just made (another) 15 jars...
PS - I use a mouli to puree it, and recycled jam jars. And this time I've used a mixture of small, fairly bland wild apples, some from our big Blenheim Orange tree, and a handful of crab apples & a few Japonica quinces. Yum, if I say it myself.Angie - GC Jul 25: £225.85/£500 : 2025 Fashion on the Ration Challenge: 26/68: (Money's just a substitute for time & talent...)0 -
Hi all, been a while since I posted but been reading regularly. Have got a manual tin opener so in event of power cut I can now open one of the many tins from my Armageddon supply - yay! Also got some church candles from wilkos and some more medicines for the store.
We need to get OH's Maglite fixed - until we do, can anyone recommend a good wind up torch?
Also I have a headlight which is in my car emergency kit but could do with another one for the house - any recommendations?
Craigy, I get my batteries off eb@y from a seller called battery bonanza; we use a variety of battery sizes and we buy Panasonics and ProCell (made by Duracell) and they are really reasonable and have long BB dates (Panasonic 2032 batteries are BB 2020!)
ETA - Thriftwizard, that looks lovely and not too faff-y!0 -

There are dozens to choose from.
Even £land sell something along the lines, albeit it is pump action, rather than wind up.
Supermarkets and other suppliers stock them , often below £5, as do Amazon UK.
For just over £8, you can get one that includes an emergency Mobile Phone Charger.
ETA: They do seem to be raving about this one.0 -
Many years ago when I was childminding I looked after a 3 year old boy who was incredibly aggressive and violent. I could never decide whether it would be safer to try to keep an eye on him as he grew up in case he became a serial killer or to run as far away as possible in case he grew up to be a serial killer.

My mate's grandchildren are cereal killers.
As soon as they arrive at his house, they head straight for the kitchen, and a bowl of Cornflakes each.0 -

Bad news about the 'leccy prices going up today, the other energy companies are bound to follow suit. Now where did I put my jumper <shivers...>. Still the aim not to turn heating on until November but there may be resistance in the household0 -
My 12" of loft insulation seems to work very well.
I put the bin out earlier, and it was 41f.
At the same time, my living room was (and remains) a pleasant 67f.0
