  • Morning all, I have just walked the lurcher as his Dadi is off fishing for the day and our elderflowers are out in abundance, so my job for the next few days is to go collect enough to make elderflower champagne in quantities, hopefully to keep us in fizz for the whole summer, I love it and it's almost free!!! Dreary here this morning but not cold and walking the lanes it smelled of greenness and flowers, it was lovely and the dog roses are opening and look so pretty. Have yourselves a good day everyone, Cheers Lyn xxx.

Haven't been on here in ages

Have loads of candles, no SHTf until I have finished painting please :D

Did any of you watch 'Africa' by David Attenborough? It said that a large proportion of our weather climate was based in the Congo I think and they are logging most of it  just think what will happen in a few years time

I also believe that over population is a big factor, so my question is, how many of you are advising your offspring not to over populate the planet?

As I don't have any offspring, this doesn't apply.

I made some of that, too, today. Never made it before. At which point do you cut it? I am guessing when it is warmer than i did as mine is rather more crumbs than yours! :rotfl:

    S'nice though.

I pour mine onto the tray and then score it into squares when it is still very warm. I find it snaps quite easily into squares when you turn it out after it has been allowed to cool - and the broken bits are "Chef's perks" around these parts :D

What is your recipe for eldeflower champagne? I've looked online but they are all different!

Will go and find my book and post it for you after supper, Cheers Lyn xxx. It's very easy to make but you must have screw cap bottles as it gets VERY fizzy, I use wine bottles with good lids but I keep it in the old shed just in case, none exploded last year but it has been known to happen!!!!!

OK veg needs longer so here is the recipe, it makes 8 pints.

    4 heads of elderflowers
1 and 1/2 lbs granulated sugar
    2 tablespoons white wine vinegar
    8 pints of cold water
2 lemons, juice squeezed and the peel cut into pieces

put everything into a large bowl/jug and give it a really good stir. Leave it to stand for 24 hours, stirring it occasionally, (I always cover mine with a tea towel to keep insects out). Strain off the liquid and bottle into sterilized bottles, screw the lids on fully, then unscrew 1/4 turn. Stand the bottles in something deep, I use an old washing up bowl, in case they froth over and put them somewhere safe to ferment. An outbuilding is safest because if they do pop, it's messy and you get glass shards everywhere, so better not do it indoors. The champagne will be ready to drink in a few days, usually 5 or 6 days, it should fizz really well when it's ready to drink, there will be a little sediment in the bottoms of the bottles so pour carefully. Hope them method works for you and you enjoy the champagne if you decide to try making it, Cheers Lyn xxx.

:) I haven't any offsprings either. If anyone has "had" my 2.1 sprogs, or whatever it is these days I have only these comments; a) I hope they're behaving themselves and b) rather you than me.

Been doing a little preptastic shopping today after w*rk which involved buying 4 more cans of corned beef. I'm developing my own personal corned beef stash, using those oblong insulated picnic bags from the 99p St0re. Corned beef stacks very neatly in 2 layers of 8 apiece. And they have flowers on them.........:p

Ermm, the coolbags have flowers, not the tins, I hasten to add. Well, at £1.49 each for John West corned beef, who can lose out?!

Tomorrow will involve a few hours of gardening, weather permitting, and it's not brill today. Rather unstable and unpredicatable. Did you hear that the Met Office has called a summit next week to discuss our weird weather? I had noticed that the official weather forecasts were getting steadily more useless. So much so that I've been listening to national radio and they've said and in ______ it's sunny/raining/ dropping frogs and looked out the window to the complete opposite extreme of weather.

Bar frogs, that was made up, natch.

Right, if the kitchen floor is dry enough to stand on, I shall make the tea. I can reach the stove from the doorway from living room to the kitch but not the sink.

Has anyone "seen" craigy lately? Been a wee whiley since she posted, hasn't it? Hope all is well with her.
