Leaving job and have to sign on again.

My son has been employed for around 3 months. He had been off sick for 6 of those weeks. He gets to work via a friend as there is no other way of getting there. His friend has just handed his notice in so my son will now have to give up this job. Is he likely to be sanction because of this?

Unfortunately yes. He must try and find an alternative way of getting to/from work such as public transport, cycling, walking. How far away is work from home? Can he move closer to the place of work so he doesn't have to commute so far? Can he buy a scooter to get to/from work?

Is it your son or his friend who has been off sick?

If the friend how has your son been getting to work.

If your son then that's alot of sick time so early in the job and they may be looking at their procedures for this.

I agree though that he needs to find an alternative way to get to work. Surely he didn't take the job thinking the friend would always be available. What about when the friend was on holiday for instance?

When he took the job 2 other friends worked there and 1 of the boys fathers. So holidays would have been booked at the same time as the boy who took him or if that wasn't possible the other friend would pick him up or the father. He starts work at 8 and from where we live there is no bus route to this place and too far to cycle. Its my son who has been off sick.

So it's more than 15 miles away. How about him getting a scooter?

Then why can't the other friend or the father give him a lift to work?

Has nothing been said to him about sick-time?

Maybe he thought he could take time off at the same time. However unlikely that might have been, surely working when he can is a better option than not working.

Things turn up...maybe he hoped to have found another lift from another member of staff.

Anyway, there are things that could sway a decision in his favour: the fact he got the job and kept at it even though there were problems with health and transport. Whether it was 6 weeks on and off or together might be a factor.

Is cycling feasible? Does the health problem rule it out for example? Is there public transport part way - close enough to walk the rest?

The other 2 people have left the job so there is just he and his friend. There isnt anyone else that could pick him up. We live in a village so not bus transport to the area he works. I am on ESA/DLA so could not afford a scooter. He has worked for a month then the next 2 weeks on and off due to being ill and then the next 6 weeks off work totally.

Can he move closer to work? The jobcentre does not accept the excuse "we live in a village". If they did then people living in villages would never find a job as there are very few actual jobs within a small village that has no public transport. Could he cycle to another nearby village to get a bus?

What does your finances have to do with him affording a scooter? He can get a loan to pay for it. A loan to buy transport to get to/from a place of employment is good debt as it will enable him to earn money to pay off the loan.

What about a push bike? How far away is it?

I cycle to work (if I have no meetings) and wish I could do it more often

How far are you away from his work.

Could he get lodgings during the week near work.

What is his illness. Just wondering if it is a long term one or will he get back to health.

Unless he finds an alternative place to live, he is never, ever going to be able to get to work.

What about all the rules and regs about signing on, looking for work, interviews etc.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.
