In my previous house the phone number was a digit different from the Pizza Shop...You can imagine can't you? all times of the day and night people phoning up for a pizza.

One night I just took the order and said be with you in 20 mins.:rotfl:

My son was so worried that someone would come and beat me up because their pizza had'nt arrived!!:T

That's the best laugh I've had for a while

My parents number is now 1 digit different to a local taxi firm. They got so fed up with people ringing at all hours and giving them the correct number they either tell them the taxi will be there in 10 minutes, or give them the number of different taxi company.

Anyone who is on TPS and still gets called, take the name of the company etc and complain via the TPS website. We deal with the Corporate version of TPS at work, and it is the responsibility of the company to remove you from their database within 28 days of you signing up to TPS. If you complain the company can get fined. So whoever was told it wasn't the company's responsibility to remove you from their list, is talking complete garbage. How it works for callcentres outside the UK I'm not sure, there's probably some loop hole there.

Can't think of anything original when these calls happen. I just stop them dead by saying I'm just going out or "he's not in, can I take a message?"

I always remember the Conservatory company that phoned me at my last place of work.

They offered to give me a quote. i hesistated for a moment, then knowing my boss would be so very proud of me, I accepted.

Then they asked for our full postal address.....

We also used to be one digit out from a local firm so often received calls intended for them. DD had her tone honed to a fine art (think Lady Bracknell and the words 'a handbag' in Importance of Being Earnest). When asked 'Are you Strippers?' she would reply 'I BEG your pardon' as though in total shock.

Actually, it was a furniture company... pine stripping. Hilarious. They aren't there any more ....pity!
  • One of my old phone numbers had one digit different from the chinese takeaway so normally around 11 on a Friday or Saturday nights I used to take orders from inebriated starving people. Wonder if they ever figured it out?

Had to change my phone number again and it was supposed to be ex directory but............. wonderful BT gave me somebody's old number and I was forever getting companies phoning up wanting to speak to this woman regarding conservatories, double glazing, life insurance etc. On one occasion I spent a good ten minutes arguing with some stupid salesperson that I wasn't Mrs XX, I had never been Mrs XX and I never would be no matter how much they argued with me. On other occasions I just made appointments for salespeople to visit as they had her address on file which they quoted to me in an attempt to maybe jog my memory of who I was really. No wonder she changed her phone number!

One caller selling some form of personal insurance (to me this time) was on the phone for about 15 minutes telling me how wonderful this insurance was and how I was practically suicidal by not having it. I agreed how great it all sounded so they ran down my phone number (obviously correct since they were calling me), my address and then wanted my bank details which I refused to give. They spent another 5-10 minutes trying to persuade me it was 'only bank details' which didn't mean they could take money out of my account. I in turn told them they could be anyone phoning up and how did I have any guarantees about them or their company. If they would send me the info through the post then I would read over it and make my decision then. Still they argued and my final word was 'post it or don't bother'. Needless to say I never heard anything again. Just goes to show more gullible people might willingly give out info to anyone over the phone.

I have since changed my number and get no cold calls whatsoever!

    Just love this thread.

A few years ago we got pestered by a kitchen company. So to be nice I made a appointment. They said myself and hubby had to be there.

Explained that I made all fiancial decisions, told them that I had bought and sold both houses we owned, organised new bathroom etc the only thing my hubby did was pay for it. well it was mostly true, I did do all the things but I help pay for them.

The sales man agreed to come around and just see me spent a hour listenig to his !!!!!! how he phoned up his boss to get discount etc etc.

Then he pulled out paper work for me to sign. I told him I could only spend £50.00 the kitchen he was offering was £5000. Told him I would need to phone hubby if I could go higher, got of the phone and said I could now offer him £100., he was so annoyed luickly for me I had a couple of boxer dogs , so he just left never been bothered by them again.:T
    Genius!
Sadly, I forgot to be in today when I was supposed to meeting a rep for a well known kitchen cold caller.

Last night I was busy asking them how they could give me more space without moving the walls. I was also rather interested that they "sold kitchens at a heavy discount". "Relative to what?" I asked and this seemed to confound them. They kept saying "well, we offer kitchens at a heavily discounted price." "Relative to what?". In the end they admitted that they didn't seel at the higher price to anyone so I suggested that they could remove the discount and simply sell at a lower price to start with.
I also read out some of the comments about them from MSE.
    Happy chappy
