    Hi new to ebay threads

Welcome, and please don't be put off by the contents of this thread. ;)
I have not left feedback - feel mean leaving neg as I have never done this (all mine are positive) but also would feel bad if somebody else brought from him and had to fight to get their cash back so have burried my head in the sand and not left any feedback - what do you think?

There's no simple answer to this, because it's really up to you, as to whether you feel you need/want/have a duty to leave feedback, etc.

Personally, I would ask myself whether I felt this was a genuine mistake. I would check this person's Feedback to see whether they have a history of similar 'lost items' or other dubious transactions. If they do, then I would leave them a negative and state that the item was lost but a refund was eventually given.

If on the other hand this seems like a one off (and bear in mind that items do get lost in the mail more often than people realise) then I would either leave a neutral and again state that the item was lost and a refund was eventually given, or I would leave it and not give any feedback at all.

If they had given you a refund straight away I would be inclined to leave them a positive as mistakes happen and they dealt with it professionally manner, but given that they made you wait when there was no need to and you had to chase them up for the refund, I wouldn rule out a positive in this case.

Sorry that's probably not much help, but there are no hard and fast rules when it comes to whether to leave negative feedback or not.

I did miss that edit. I blame my failing eyesight. It had nothing to do with the two pints of bitter and bottle of wine I had earlier on a great night out with some friends in Shepperton. :D

Surely we should have retained the death penalty for those who confuse “your” with “you’re”. Society would be so much safer if such criminals were removed from our streets and web forums.

I don't understand why a polite request for feedback is wrong?

It's not wrong as such, but it is asking for trouble. The other way of looking at it is - why are you asking politely for something that is VOLUNTARY?

Why not though? The whole system of feedback is important to everybody - that's why it's there - just because it's voluntary doesn't mean that you are asking for trouble just by asking for feedback - that's quite an aggressive & antagonistic stance and as a relatively new user of ebay something that I find a little bit scary & intimidating - those feedbacks that I may request are important to me and important for anyone that deals with me in the future!

Definition of voluntary (taken from a dictionary)

'done, made, brought about, undertaken, etc., of one's own accord or by free choice'

The buyer/seller leaves feedback if and when they want. There really is no need to ask/prompt or remind them.

As a seller it annoys me very much so being asked for feedback. Sometimes I will think Oh it's a new eBayer and let it go. Other times I will reply and explain how feedback works. I won't be rude or anything just state the facts.

putting up the definition of voluntary doesn't answer any of the points that i made though - many things are voluntary - are you also annoyed when you are asked to vote? when you are asked to sign a petition? when you are asked for a donation for charity appeals? if you are asked for any kind of help? something being voluntary doesn't mean you shouldn't do it - if nobody gave feedback and had the same attitude as that surely the whole thing would fall down, i mean as a seller how would you be able to sell if you had no feedback? and why wouldn't you WANT to leave feedback anyway?

anyway, each to their own i suppose. i think i've learnt something here about other people's understanding of ebay

Voting - no - I fill in a form, then show up if I choose. No-one bothers to doorstep my flats.
Petitions - no - I see them on the street, check out what they're for, and give them a wide berth if I'm not interested
Charity - yes, a little. When I have no debts perhaps it will bother me less. And those guys with the clipboards are a menace.
Help - no - because it's usually someone I like asking for it.

Bottom line: I don't like to be BOTHERED by people if they don't have a good reason for it. If I want to do these things, I'll do them in my own good time, thanks. Except for the help, as the circumstances may vary a lot, and usually people have a good reason for asking for help.
