They pay, I think - have you read a receipt from some supermarkets recently where they say they're paying 2.5% of the transaction to some company to handle the payment ?

Is there a list somewhere out there that can tell us which companies do offer cashback. (what about B&Q, Halfords, Spar ???) There's nothing more frustrating than asking, then being told NO and having to wander off and find a cashpoint or a supermarket.

This is just a VAT scam by the large retailers. The payments handling company referred to is outside the EU, and there's a small but significant advantage to them by doing it this way. I believe HMC&E is paying some attention to this little wheeze.

i've never been charged for cashback - its treated almost like an atm withdrawal, isn't it?
Not buying clothes for a year - it's liberating!
  • There is no charge, it is in the interests of the supermarkets to push cash at customers as it costs them more to bank it as they have to pay the bank and a secure cash delivery service to take it.

some places have a minimum spend to get cashback, usually £5, but that normally only applies to pubs and small grocery shops.

supermarkets will give you cashback for no charge on any amount purchased.

I believe some small grocery shops also make a small charge for cashback (as well as having a minimum spend) but can't remember for sure: I think I decided not to have the cash.

    Our local pub gives cashback!

Do these places where they charge actually warn you each time of a fee, or is it up to the customer to spot it? Seems very unfair to me.
