I do understand that some skills are transferable, but surely with high unemployment and competition for jobs catering employers would give preference to the best applicants who already had plenty of catering experience?
It all seems very strange to me, although personal connections and contacts do sometimes override normal application procedures.Who having known the diamond will concern himself with glass?

I suspect their is a lot more going on here than OP is letting on.0 -
This is one of my big fears about moving jobs in the current 'climate' - that it turns out to be even more awful than the current one!
Some employers are using the downturn in the jobs market to take hearty advantage of workers who aren't sure of their rights or what's what when starting a new job.
I know people who have been placed by the job centre agencies in AWFUL jobs - no contract, awful working conditions, and treated like dirt because they came from the agency - the job centre agency did not give a hoot - they are STILL sending people there. 5 out of the 6 placed at one time LEFT almost immediately even though they were genuinely desperate for work. I'm now supporting my family member rather than have her miserable working there. Life really is too short and family ALWAYS comes first.Less stuff, more life, love, laughter and cats!
Even if I'm on the shopping threads, it doesn't mean I'm buying! Sometimes it's good to just look and then hit the CLOSE button!0 -
So it is no surprise to me that any advice which tells a newbie not to think along the lines they have been thinking will be jumped on by him.Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam0 -

I have no idea whether this is the case but might it not be likely that the OP is a lecturer in either Catering or Hospitality?0 -
If the OP has evidence that he was paid less then agreed on his contract then it will be difficult to sanction him. I disagree with your comment which I have highlited in Bold, a morally respectable person who had been lied to and cheated by their employer would quit their job. At least this showed he had dignity even if this might not pay the bills
He states clearly he didn't see the contract. So he left his job without signing or EVEN SEEING the contract. So yes, he would be liable for sanction. He should have signed the contract then resigned from his current post.0 -
OP - some of the snidely remarks on this thread are ridiculous. I very much doubt they would talk like that to your face. Some people think they can say what they like on this forum as they can hide. Pathetic really.
I think your comebacks have been great
(sorry, no advice re your situation, but just wanted to high five you) :-)
You'd be surprised. And I'd put money on the starting point of the comments coming from the JC when he gets 'the full story' across. If he doesn't like people ONLINE telling him cold hard truths & questioning his actions, book your appointment at the JC!
And good luck.0 -

I realise that now but it was unclear about his situation from the opening post. Yes he should have had it in writing or seen the contract0 -
What I'm a bit confused is whether you are a nrp or pwc. You mention maintenance payment, so assume you are a nrp. If so, I really don't see bringing forward the argument that you wanted to spend more time with your children, especially at their age, as one that the job centre would really sympathise with.
I can understand how angry you must feel with the organisation, and yourself for being too trusting, but the job centre won't care at all. I assume they will look at the fact that you did have a job to support yourself, but gave it up because it wasn't what you expected. You did have the choice to keep the job and do what you are doing now, that is looking for something else. Do you have any other arguments to put forward besides the fact that you got lied to -job centre won't care one bit, for them it is about supporting yourself financially, not the fairness of the job market-, nor the fact that you think you have a right to see your school aged children more at the tax payers expense.
I think it doesn't look too good, but then you might be lucky and get someone who really sympathise with your plea.0 -

Nope it was through a friend who was the head of HR for the company (no longer a friend of course) she sat in my front room and quoted me figures...felt good at the time and I was motivated to do it, move on and do something new and exciting. Except the truth wasn't what she said...
I am suprised that this took place in a front room, I would have thought a job of that level would have needed at least 2 interviews, one of which would have been in the place of intended work, the other at a guess the local regional office or Head office.
Catering hours, even at GM level are hard and long. (been there, no such thing IMO of set hours)
What ever the outcome good luck for the future.Breast Cancer Now 100 miles October 2022 100 / 100miles
