There was a programme on TV last week(dispatches I believe), that tested the own brand basics against the more expensive better counterpart.
Strangely enough I was encouraged by their findings.
They proved by scientifically testing the food, the cheaper options were in fact inferior to the dearer options. The ingredients did actually have less food value, poorer quality, for various reason e.g. less protein etc.
I was encouraged because I have always wondered if the dearer product was just the cheaper but in more elaborate wrapping, but no, they are in fact a better quality product.0 -

not a daft question at all, my MIL refuses to buy basics as its "not real butter"
I buy the basics stuff and other than the fact that I can't get it unsalted, I haven't noticed a difference to be honest with you.
I'm keeping an eye out for reduced cream so I can make my own unsalted when I find it!Feb GC £41.23/£90

By law all food has to be labelled with a list of ingredients unless it is an ingredient itself -eg butter, milk, yogurt, rice, lentils etc
If there are added ingredients these are listed -so butter might have salt added, yogurt might have sugar, fruit, thickeners etc added.
Milk varies in flavour depending on what the cow ate and what time of the year she was milked. Therefore butter will also vary in taste. A different flavour does not mean that it isn't pure butter.
Value butter is usually imported, and may be a blend of milk from different countries. You pay less for this than you would for English butter and you pay even more for butter from a single herd.
Just buy the one you like the flavour of. Personally I like to support our dairy farmers so only buy English. But I buy the cheapest English butter I can find.0 -

I'd always thought it was aprt of the European Butter Mountain, so needs shifting, and a cheap price is a way of doing that
I use it in cooking and like it
I'll add this to the exisitng thread on Value products later.

Ive tried it and it tastes fine. I try and stock up on Lurpak when it is on offer and freeze it but the value butter from Tescos is fine. Tescos also now do an unsalted Value butter. If you blend it with some oil to make it spreadable it is almost indistinguishable from more expensive brand IMO.0

Get stocked up folks before they go up in price again!0

I made a fruity vegetable curry this week using potato, onion, peas, sweetcorn, sultanas and a Tesco value tin of curry sauce and it was delicious. A big pot of curry for less than £1 and did us for two meals. First time I've used the sauce but will def use again for a cheap meal.“A budget is telling your money where to go instead of wondering where it went.” - Dave Ramsey0
