Another question, as I've never taxed a car before, if I just take my insurance document and the blue V5 form, is that enough to tax the car, as I won't have a renewal form. it wasn't really clear to me on DVLA's website, and I am totally car-illerate when it comes to things like this I'm afraid.

Don't you need insurance document, renewal form and MOT certificate (if car's over 3yrs old)?

forgot about the MOT cert, I've got that - what do you mean by the renewal form?

The letter you get in the post about 2-3 weeks before the current tax disc runs out. I've just paid mine over the internet and just used the reference number on the renewal form to do this.

Thinking back to when I had my old 'Bruno the Uno', I used the MOT certificate, the renewal form and the insurance document. Don't think you need anything else (last time I needed all those was 5 years ago now!!)

love the name - Bruno! new car is called Clint the Clio, to replace Micky the Micra! As I've just bought it at the weekend, I don't have the renewal form, but I'm assuming I can go to the post office and they can tell me what I'll probably need to go back home to get! The car's not taxed at all, so the guy I'm buying it from probably won't have the renewal letter either.

From memory I think you can tax it without the form - they just give you it back these days anyway. As long as you have the MOT, insurance and V5.

I'm still trying to figure out how my little 1.4 5 yr old Lanos cost me £190.00 last month to tax yet other people who have bigger cars than mine are only paying £175.00. I think Mr Brown got it totally round the wrong way with his road tax changes last year, and knowing my luck he will reduce the tax so that the higher engine will have to pay £190.00 and my little cc will come down just as I have forked out nigh on £200.00..grr!!!

Natty68, it's because a 5 yr old car is taxed on emissions and the top group for anything made before April 06 is for anything with emissions of 185g of CO2 or above. I pay the top rate on my 2 litre Alfa as well (213g) which is stupid when there are people whose cars are far more polluting but pay the same rate. What's wrong with a proper sliding scale, say 50p per gram of CO2?
