    Hi

Before a recent visit to Mallorca I ordered a VODAFONE YU SMART 8 SIM from http://www.simcardspain.es/en/118-vo...for-spain.html and it arrived in the UK within a few days.

Other details here: https://www.vodafone.es/particulares/es/moviles/tarifas/movil-prepago/hablar-y-navegar/ (use Google translate or suchlike).

On arrival I popped the SIM in my phone and sent off the code for the 'Smart 8' 500MB deal and all worked fine. Tested throughput in Santa Ponsa and was seeing 4-5 meg downloads.

The deal includes 20 texts & 20 minutes to Spanish Nos but I never used any of these. For some reason I was able to make something like a hundred 'free' texts to UK mobiles and those of friends on holiday with us.

    Cheers - Andy
How did you get it sent to the UK? the order page where you put the address only gives option for Spanish addresses

Hi. I've just tried to set up a new account and about a quarter of the way down the 'Create an account' page in the 'Your address' area there is a pull-down set to Spain that can be changed to any country in the world. Maybe it's a browser problem. HTH

No, here: Simcardspain. The first link in my original post.
  • We leave next week to go to Spain for a couple of months. Last month I used PrepaidSIMCard.org to buy a data only SIM for my iPad, and they provided an Ortel Mobile card, 1GB ready to go.

They have just told me that Ortel will cease trading on 8th December. I contacted Ortel who confirmed this and told me I could switch to another company once I am there and before the 8th.

Could anyone please suggest which company to go to to get a prepaid 1 GB/30 days service? I have looked at some sites and I can't work out which ones offer a tablet option. A few months ago I tried Three at home and it was a disaster getting it to work as they needed to send a SMS to the iPad, which isn't possible.

    Thanks.

You don’t say where in Spain but try the following post ..

    https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/comment/63507330#Comment_63507330

Tuenti (pronounce twenty) is PAYG 6 Euros + VAT 1 GB for 30 days and if you run out you get 3 GB for 12 Euros + VAT.

If you have reception problems I would recommend switching to Orange but it is more expensive. Try Tuenti first and see how it goes.

Just go to a Spanish Mobile phone shop, if you are in a costal area they will speak good English. They may ask you if your phone is free when they mean unlocked but that’s the only language issue you are likely to have.

Tell them you want the best tariff for Mobile Internet not phone calls or SMS.

Thanks to EU roaming charges cap it is cheaper to call the UK using a UK mobile in Spain then it is calling the UK from a Spanish mobile.

If you have problems activating the SIM in an iPad get it working in a phone first then switch it to the iPad. Does the iPad have WiFi? If so use your phone as a hotspot. That way you can place the phone in a part of the house with good reception and put your iPad anywhere it is in range of your phone.

  • I have Movistar mobile internet working but it seems to drain credit rather quick.

does anyone know the ussd code you dial to buy an internet pack? the last 3 Movistar shops had ques of 10-20 people... I'll search for a different sim too.

in face, any dial codes for Movistar would be useful
Order of events: Banks lose our money -> get bailed out -> were inflating GBP to cover it -> now taxing us -> next will grab your funds direct -> things get really desperate to balance the books. What should have happened?: banks go bust and we lost our money much quicker
  • Hi - have just purchased a sim card from simcardspain as previous links (thank you) to use in my mifi unit when I go to Lanzarote next month. On the website it states you have to call a number to activate it, but further down the page it says it is delivered and ready to use in Spain. Can anyone confirm which is correct as I am not intending to put it in my iphone - just to use the internet whilst I'm away. Thanks in advance.

All I had to do was enter the pin No on the SIM card holder when I used my iPad and Mifi in Spain, bought the Vodaphone sim from a Spanish seller who pre registered it for me.
  • The family are going to Tenerife in August and my youngest can not contemplate 2 weeks without constant internet access, so I have been reading this threat with great interest.

The Masmovil offerings seem very interesting, but I have a couple of questions.

Looking at Google streetview, there is a phone shop very close to the apartments so it should be easy to buy a SIM when we arrive. Is there any benefit of ordering from one of the suppliers that will deliver to the UK rather than buying when we get there?

I am a little concerned by the auto-topups which seem to be needed to get the tariffs with the large data bundles included. I believe that these need to be linked to a credit card.

Is there any issue linking to a UK credit card?
Will a pre-pay credit card do (might be easier to limit spending this way)?
Can you link more than 1 SIM to the same credit card?

As we will only need the access for 14 days, how easy is it to cancel the auto-topup after that?

    Thanks in advance.
