Does Debt Make You Feel Trapped?

I sympathise completely. I've been paying various DCAs since about 2001/2002, not to mention the mortgage that should have been finished a couple of years ago, and by my reckoning, assuming I don't have any more pay rises (unrealistic, I know, but you can only count on what you get when you get it), it'll all be paid off in about August 2012, if all goes acording to plan - which it won't, but hey, it gives me an idea where the light at the end of the tunnel is.

It seems like I've spent most of my adult life in debt <sigh> - before it all went pear-shaped, I'd had the (endowment) mortgage for years. When it all went pear-shaped, I had to cash in the endowment - I couldn't afford the dreadful hike in premiums - and had the mortgage converted to repayment. Still, there will be an end to it all eventually, and that's when I can celebrate - my money will be my own!

    Yes! Completely!
feel really trapped and sometimes feel like this will be my life forever. Other times I'm fine with it. Not sure why I have the ups and downs but I think the longer I'm in this situation the more I'll have the downs it seems. However, this board helps a lot. Am v impatient and want to have it all gone NOW.

I am going to attempt matched betting in the Easter hols as I think this could really help - if I can get little lump sums to add together to perhaps pay off one of the 'smaller' debts or even just of all of them, I might feel better. Or at least have some money to go out and feel young again with!

Yes Bunny it does make sense. I get down days when I wish things could be different, and yes sometimes the tunnel does seem so bloody long. The important thing is that we have all learnt an important lesson. In years to come, we will think of the long hard road we have all travelled and raise a glass at being debt free.

Like Sea I get the moments when I feel totally overwhelmed by everything but then times when I am fine.

  • I know exactly how you feel - I just don't think I'll EVER be debt free. I've had a really tough few weeks and I just feel like going out and blowing a whole lot more money to cheer myself up. It's such a lonely feeling too when you can't confide how bad things are to friends

Hi SS, we all have times when we feel as though we are making progress and then we just feel as though we have a great big brick wall that we are banging our heads against.

Unfortunately, we generally remember the bleak times before we remember how well we are doing.

We will get there, and we will deserve the good feelings that we will have at that time.

In the meantime, we all have each other here - I certainly feel much more comfortable and more focussed about my debt journey since I joined MSE than I ever did before, and thank my lucky stars that I am on MSE/DFW because otherwise my situation would be worse and my tunnel even longer.

    Hang on in there x

My friends have no idea about my debt (I know it's not a lot compared to some), and they may even be worse off than me financially its not something we talk about. I know what you mean about it being lonely though, just wish I could scream sometimes. I must admit though that this year I have really knuckled down to put me in a better financial situation. Have saved really well and paid a good bit off my debts.

Somethings bound to happen soon that will spoil it all for me. That's what always happens isn't it?

I have told pretty much everyone I know about my debt situation, something that has caused big friction with OH - it does help so is there no one person you could trust enough to chat with?

Ive spent the whole day feeling incredibly trapped and depressed. The debt spoils our whole life. We cant do the house, have a holiday, go out, go shopping and my OH cant even take a day off sick because he doesnt get paid if he does. He has a bad back at the moment; we are also trapped because we have a lot of commitments we cant back out of and our money is all tied up and not much of it can be used to pay off the debts. It feels that everyone is after a slice of our money and the taxman crucifies us. Even though we both pay tax I have been told by our accountant that we will be getting a massive tax bill next year, I have to save £60 per week of our money to save for it. What money has been earned we have not had for ourselves; we were saying today that we've got no quality of life, we've got nothing to show for all our hard work. We go to work day in, day out and get no reward. Our debt is hardly going down either; its going to be a long hard road and I just have to mindlessly watch tv, play a computer game or read a book most of my free time otherwise I would go crazy. Sorry if I depressed you.
