To dye or not to dye - that is the question.

My daughter was in a show and needed a tie dye top, so off we went and got a white top and some clothes dye, it was a huge success and she loved it, i had lots of dye left so we went through both of their wardrobes and got any clothes that still fitted but were maybe faded or had small stains and either tie dyed or just dyed them.
My daughter wears fitted white blouses for 2 terms a year and as they still fitted but not smart enough for September we dyed them different colours and she loves them, in fact we have started a trend all her friends are now doing it. My son had lots of trousers that were too short and now had lots of colourful shorts.
Was a really fun activity for the kids and now I dont need to buy as many summer clothes, plus it was a good lesson in mixing colours for them.0 -
That's a really good idea. I tried it on a white shirt of my partner's. It was a good shirt. He wore it for our wedding, then for another wedding, then regularly for quite a few years for work, etc, until it naturally started not looking very white anymore. I was dying some curtains purple, so I offered to chuck his shirt in the machine with them, and it came out fine. He carried on wearing it until the collar started to wear out, then as it was such a nice colour, I cut it up to add to the 'shabby chic' patchwork bedspread I'm making. I like the machine dyes....you can really give stuff a new lease of life.2025's challenges: 1) To fill our 10 Savings Pots to their healthiest level ever

Hi All,
I have a lovely winter coat which is the most awful shade of "old lady pink". It was expensive (for me, £90) and I've never worn it, I keep telling myself I'll Ebay it but haven't yet. Now, I have decided to try and dye it to save me buying a new one this winter. It's a polyester/wool mix with a texture weave, almost like basket or herringbone. What do you all think, will a dye take? I plan on going for brown or black. Any suggestions gratefully recieved!

It will dye , but the polyester element will prevent full uptake of the dye. It will most likely ( depending on the percentages of the mix ) not come out the full true colour of the dye as shown on the packet. You will get a paler colour. This may or may not be acceptable to you depending on which shade you choose. Any accessories ( lining )and stitching are likely to be 100% polyester and will not dye well, if at all , so you may end up with a two tone garment ( contrast stitching in pink )0

Can you learn to embrace the colour?
Accessorise it to "toughen it up" a bit. Purples and charcoals and denim are all colours/fabrics you can use. Wear it with darker opaque tights in afore-mentioned colours and/or boots. Wear it open when you can, showing a deeper contrast colour to break up the block of pink or add a big scarf to the front when it's colder.
If you wear trousers a lot, you could maybe think about shortening it to 3/4 length, which would minimise the surface area of "pink" you're wearing!
Modernise the look with a big tote bag, loads available on the high street.

Then again, you could accessorise it like this and bring out your inner princess!!

I think dyeing it is a bit risky!0 -
Thanks very much Bronnie and carly. To be frank, no accessories would ever "princess up" this particular shade of pink, it's so awful. I love pink and have owned two other pink coats, but this was a mistake.
I don't mind having pink lining, that might actually be quite nice, so I think I will either go for purple or brown! I love purple, and to be honest, the size of me, I won't be wearing skirts and tights anytime soon, but I do appreciate your help. Wish me luck!!!

Hi Jackie
There are a couple of older threads about dying coats but no useful answers really. How about emailing Dylon saying you've bought one of their dyes and asking if that certain material would dye? Dunno , just a thought.
If it was me i would just give it a bash anyway and see how it goes - what have you got to lose?!?!
Ill merge this with this thread later
Let us know if you try it out - I double dare you!:p

Aw! jackie, opaque tights are great for winter and very comfy and flattering for all shapes and sizes. Some lovely deep subtle colours too, to liven up plain outfits.
I think purple would be a great colour to go for, any bits that don't take the dye will still tone in. Good luck, you're very brave!0
