Another vote for cheap salt (value table salt in our case). We used this when dying a throw and some jeans. The colour has held fast.

I need some help and advice on dying a wool coat that I have. I got it from M&S years back and it is in a dog tooth pattern. Although the coat pattern is a little dated the actual shape and style of the coat is not. So I thought can I dye it black.
I have had a hunt about on the web but nothing definitive in an answer.
The compossition of the coat is made up of:-
68% Wool
32% Polymide
Lining is 100% polyester (but I am not worried about that).
It states dry clean only on the label but I have washed the belt previously with no problem.Cat, Dogs and the Horses are our fag and beer money:beer:

I dyed a pink coat the same mix last.year or this spring. The polyamide doesnt take the colour, and si it took three lots of dye to get it a deep lavender tone, your coat will never go black, black but you nay end up with a really dark grey/black check on it, if you feel its acceptable like that give it a go. Personally, I would. Use twice as much dye as you think you need, and do it twice. Using a cold water dye, mind. It's what is inside your head that matters in life - not what's outside your windowEvery worthwhile accomplishment, big or little, has its stages of drudgery and triumph; a beginning, a struggle and a victory. - Ghandi0

It is very difficult to dye wool to a pure black, it just doesn't take very well and as said before the mixture of fibres will mean that the result would be very uneven. I'm not saying it won't work but it will take quite a lot of dye and a number of trys to get an even colour all over.
Which reminds me I must dye some wool soon, I'm running out of dyed fibre to spin.Grocery Challenge 112.20/250.00
