Years ago dyeing clothes was such a big chore that I never attempted it but now with dyes that go into washing machine I decided to have a go.
I had two old pairs of cream jeans I nearly threw out but bought two cartons of dye, one navy and one brown and now have two pairs of very smart jeans which will get another few years use. Total cost £10. It was only reading posts on here from time to time that gave me the idea. Now I am looking at old tee shirts also cream curtains that could do with a change of colour. Its amazing what ideas you get on here.

I have a long-sleeved white t-shirt. I spilt tea all the way down it, and despite soaking straight away, and the use of bleach, I couldn;t get it out :( DD did me a purple tie-dye and it's now even better than new :T I'll see if I can do a pic later :D

Funny you should post this as I have 3 pairs of jean type trousers that I want to dye black so they are on my 'things to do list'. Used to dye faded bed linen when the kids were small and money was very tight.
Mortgage and Debt free but need to increase savings pot.
  • I have dyed a lot over the years. Either everything black as a teen ( yep an 80s goth) or a lot of linen and linen blend for re-enactment stuffs. The washing machine dyes ok and if you are brave, foolhardy or clever (I'm in the third catagory! ;) :rotfl:) you can blend packs to make further shades.

I have an urge to play with dye again.

Mordants and natural dyes are interesting but can be smelly, messy and just plain yukky.
    Put the kettle on. ;)
  • I'm a confirmed dyer!! Jeans mostly, but last week I dyed a cotton cardi and a top. They came out like new :T

I like the anticipation as you open the washer door.....has it worked or not :rotfl:

I think I need to get out a bit more.......

Like the idea of blending colours Alison. I was thinking how nice it would be if I could dye various pale curtains or bedspreads when I decorate to get the colour I want. May experiment with this on some old pillowcases. I buy good quality indian cotton white bedcovers but they get a bit tired looking in the end but I do hate binning stuff. Could perhaps dye curtains and covers to match. I know this will cost a bit but not as expensive as replacing.
  • The trick is to add the whole box of a pale shade and add a little of the darker. It's not an exact science all depends on the colours used and the shade you want to make.
    Put the kettle on. ;)
