HELP!Emergency taxed even though p45 given
Comments
-
I spoke to manager who said the gross pay was the figure I was expecting so its definitely a 6 week wage. I work 36 hours a week not 28.
Thanks for help so far0 -
Havent got a payslip yet
The P45 was issued in april from my old job, I left at end of march so right on the cusp of new tax year, its the only one I have.
This is my only job.
I dont think I can wait until next month, how am I meant to live?
Finding out what the problem is may help to sort it out.
From part 1A of the P45 that you retained (hopefully) can you give the details so I can tell if it is this years P45 or last years?
When will you get your payslip? How do you know that the problem is tax if you have not had a payslip.0 -
I rang my manager and he said that the gross was correct so the only thing it can be is tax. I have retained my part of the P45 what do you need to know?0

It is numbered 12 and was issued on 3rd April so it is in old tax year. It is the only one I have though
I havent even had a p60.
Im not sure when the payslips come in, its my first one sorry
Is it basically a case of if my employer won't do a loan Im stuffed?0 -
Until we know how much exactly the gross is, the tax code used and exactly what type of deductions have been applied we cannot answer this.
Did you have any salary advances in the period?
something is definately wrong though, £500 is too excessive0 -

In this situation we'd probably just turn a blind eye and bung you on the current standard tax code if you worked for us, but if it's a bigger organisation with a more formal 'one size fits all no deviations from procedure' approach, then they won't use it and you need to do a P46 ASAP to get the new code sent through to them. Legally, your employer is right in what they've done (we'd be naughty doing what we'd do).
Don't just wait, you MUST do the P46 to get your real code issued, and it may take a couple of months to get it through and all sorted out. Could you ask your employer for a loan against the tax refund when it comes through?
It is a myth that old P45s should not be used, the following gives details of what an employer should do with an old P45....

The table showing what action to take is on page 2.
In this case the P45 if from last year could well have been in the period that would allow the new employer to use the old code (updated by this year's increase) on a cumulative basis.0 -
No advances at all.
I worked 196 hours at £6.08 so the gross is £1191.68.
Apparently I have only been paid for 184 hours so 12 hours short which is £72. 96
Thanks fro all your help, im sorry I dont have the payslip and because its a big company I am struggling to find out what has happened.0 -

You still have not given the details asked for from the P45. It is an old P45 but still should have got you onto emergency tax.
When did you start at this new employment?
The point of trying to find out what has happened is first to establish if you have been underpaid and second to establish if your employer was at fault if you were underpaid. If they were it would strengthen your case in asking fo a loan.
Forget about a P60 you left before that would be due to be issued.0 -
O.K I have to be honest. It's not a great situation to be in, there appears to have been a mix-up/mistake or confusion of some sort however these things do happen and invariably take a while to get sorted
Whilst i understand you want to get to the bottom of it this is not going to help you in the short term. I would see if there is a credit union in your town or village and whether they would be prepared to loan you a small amount for the next month or 2. Failing that you could try your bank for an overdraft. Apart from that it's family/friends (so you can buy a small amount of stuff for your daughters birthday) or perhaps an emergency car boot or ebaying session.
How old is the daughter? Would she understand that mum hasn't been paid the right amount and that she will get a proper birthday present next month but in the meantime get her a nice choloate cake or a few smellies/makeup/toys etc? It's very much going to depend on how old your daughter is I think.
Hope you get something sorted.
