UPS seem to just jump straight back in the van if the recipient is not in.

I had a UPS driver leave a package on the doorstep.

Some people I know would've claimed they never received it in these circumstances, but I am honest and merely informed the sender that their courier was letting them down.

    1) datlex claims for non-arrival of the items
    2) Waterstone's refund
    3) Waterstone's charge Yodel
    4) Yodel deduct from the courier's wages

If the courier was dishonest - they have lost out.
If the neighbour was dishonest - the courier has lost out.

datlex has a point here... Unless the customer has agreed that delivery to a neighbour is acceptable; the courier is in the wrong.

Great if you do get on with your neighbours - but not everybody has that option.

It's the retailer that instructs the courier, the courier hasn't done anything wrong. Whaterstones can't 'charge' yodel anything and I doubt Yodel can just deduct from a driver's wage either.

As pointed out above Royal Mail shall be doing this (with an opt out option), with the boom of online shopping retailers and couriers must adapt, in this respect it's one area of inconvience to the customer that is difficult to over come (had the parcel been returned the OP would be here moaning about the long journey to collect as Yodel depots are being merged, plus are typically on industrial estates unlike RM depots which can often be in town, so you have to be lucky if it's close by), until things can just pop out the USB port courier/delivery arrangements will continue to be a difficult aspect for some customers.

Refusing to collect a parcel from a few doors down so the retailer loses the value of the product supplied is very childish.

So was there a problem when you walked the few yards to collect your parcel ?

Sorry but I think you are a very fortunate person if this is such an important drama in your life - Who knows you might find this neighbour is very nice and you make a friend -stranger things have happened. I was wondering how come you don't know such a close neighbour -Are they or you new to the area. I know all my neighbours to at the very least say hello to in the street-It's pretty much what neighbours do ......isn't it ?

If you wasn't going to be in for your parcel why not get it delivered to where you were or be in for your parcel, Yodel isn't to know if your in or not is he. He's just saved you having to go to their depot to collect the item you should be thanking him not giving him a hard time on here. It's Waterstones you should have a gripe with that they didn't send it with RM. Yodel has just done his job.

I had a PS3 delivered and left with a neighbour and an expensive £70 electronic cat flap. I did`nt know either of the neighbours. I know why the courier does it, they get paid per drop and they will have to deliver again if it`s a fail.
I have`nt lived in my street long and yes I do now know the neighbours to say Hello to but for all I know they could have said they did`nt take the PS3 worth over £250. What happens then? I guess they would have to give me another PS3

Ive popped a little printed sign on my door that says if we are not in please only leave with number XXXX so far its worked and weve had no issues. My proper neighbours would never give us the parcel back

Depends on the contract between a) Waterstone's and Yodel then b) Yodel and their driver (employee or sub-contracter).

I'm damned sure that if I contracted with a courier to deliver to a given address and it was delivered to a different address without prior agreement from either me or the recipient then I would be declining to pay for that delivery.

If Waterstone's have decided "leave it with neighbours" is acceptable and told Yodel this - then Waterstone's carry the cost. If Yodel have decided this and told their drivers - then Yodel carry the cost. If the driver has done so against/without standing instructions from Yodel - they risk carrying the cost.

It's not about the OP refusing to collect the parcel; it's about the possibility of the unknown neighbour losing or denying the existence of the parcel. The OP should not be out of pocket in that case.
I need to think of something new here...
