you soon wont be ordering anything through the post soon as royal mail are piloting the same thing - using neighbours if your not in.
there currently not allowed to do so hence the little red cards they drop through the door. will help them compete they say.0 -
Nose/spite/face.
Just knock on the neighbours door and get your books. Then don't use Amazon again if it upsets you, but I honestly can't see what the big deal is.0 -

This was Waterstone's, but yes, he's excluding Amazon too if he won't buy from anyone who uses Yodel.
As you say, cutting off his nose to spite his face. I'm guessing that 99% of people would be grateful: walk next door and you've got your item, no faffing around arranging a re-delivery.Je suis Charlie.0 -
what are you going to do if the neighbor knocks on your door and delivers them to you, are you going to refuse it?:beer:0

It is not my obligation to collect the wrongly delivered item. Waterstones or whoever else are obliged to arrange deliver to the customer.
Still going to be a money saving thing as I will now boycott all firms that use Yodel.
These companies use Yodel because they are cheap, if a residential address the driver is most likely paid 40pence for up to 3 delivery attempts (and no pay if you collect or parcel is returned to sender). Waterstones will be able to state whether or not a parcel may be left in a 'safe place' which would be down to the discretion of the driver (who would be in trouble for leaving it somewhere silly like a doorstep in open view of a main road for example). a neighbour, with a card to say left at no xx, is a pretty safe place.
Yodel is a third rate courier, the average consumer does wish not to pay for a first rate courier, in either the delivery charge or the price of the goods, and so the situation you are in is one of the costs of shopping online which is an environment allowing consumer to pick the cheapest retailer with ease thus encouraging competition on price, which will ultimately affect service at some point.
Collect the parcel and be happy you have some books to enjoy. In the game of chess you can never let your adversary see your pieces0 -
Just out of curiosity, what happens if the neighbour says they never received anything?0

Yodel interview the driver and either them or the neighbour get in trouble for lying. In the game of chess you can never let your adversary see your pieces0

1) datlex claims for non-arrival of the items
2) Waterstone's refund
3) Waterstone's charge Yodel
4) Yodel deduct from the courier's wages
If the courier was dishonest - they have lost out.
If the neighbour was dishonest - the courier has lost out.
datlex has a point here... Unless the customer has agreed that delivery to a neighbour is acceptable; the courier is in the wrong.
Great if you do get on with your neighbours - but not everybody has that option.I need to think of something new here...0 -

I'm sure Waterstone's are fully aware that Yodel leave parcels with neighbours. All couriers I've dealt with do that. If Waterstone's don't want parcels left with neighbours they can write that into their contract with Yodel...I bet they haven't.
BTW don't give datlex any ideas...PLEASE!0 -
Not all couriers do this.
UPS seem to just jump straight back in the van if the recipient is not in.
Parcelfarce appear to do the same thing.
Of course, this may be down to the individual driver but I have seen instances of this from both of these companies. There are two types of people in the world: Those that can extrapolate information.0
