Yodel leaving items with neighbours I don't know

Options
I placed an order with Waterstones recently on the understanding from their website that they used Royal Mail. Had I known this was not correct I would have arranged to use their collect from store service. I came home this evening to find a card through my door from Yodel saying they had left these goods with this neighbour who I do not know.

I have spoken to both Waterstones and Yodel to complain. Yodel say it is their policy to leave items with neighbours even if they are total strangers!!! I have the managers of both these companies ringing me tomorrow.

My query is, how can goods be counted as delivered to me if I did not sign for the goods? Am I entitled under law to get a full refund on the items as a result?
Paid off the last of my unsecured debts in 2016. Then saved up and bought a property. Current aim is to pay off my mortgage as early as possible. Currently over paying every month. Mortgage due to be paid off in 2036 hoping to get it paid off much earlier. Set up my own bespoke spreadsheet to manage my money.

One way to get to know your neighbours. :D

Why would you want a refund have you not been to collect your parcel?

I often take parcels and flowers in for my neighbours not all of them I know. I just think it's a neighbourly thing to do.

  • It says quite clearly on their website that they use both Royal Mail and a Courier to deliver.

It says free delivery is via Royal Mail. Couriers are for paid delivery.

It is not my obligation to collect the wrongly delivered item. Waterstones or whoever else are obliged to arrange deliver to the customer.

Still going to be a money saving thing as I will now boycott all firms that use Yodel.

Every courier company I've had delivering an item leaves the parcel with a neighbour when I'm out which is easier for me to collect from as the Royal Mail sorting office is miles away.

How do you expect the courier to know which of your neighbours you do know and which ones you don't know?

Exactly they do not know so they should not assume people do know their neighbours.

My Royal Mail office is close by.

However the original post was not about collecting from neighbours but about incorrect delivery.

  • What do you expect the Yodel driver to do? You ordered the item mistakenly believing it would be delivered by Royal Mail. You were wrong and not at home to take delivery from Yodel. Most normal people are happy for their neighbours to take in parcels for them. Mine do so for me and I for them without any drama. As I've said all couriers I've had leave parcels with neighbours. It's not only Yodel you'll have to boycott.
