    I am sure I am going to regret this, but here goes...

    I used to be more of a natural long distance runner, I was doing H/M in 72 min and F/M was 2hr 45... 5000mtrs a little slower than 16 minutes, I always found the 5000 tough.

    Last few years I have probably done too many weights, just core stuff like dead lifts and benches. I have always kept the running up but sadly am only doing 8 min mileage these days but have no problem with ever knocking a 5 to 10 miler out, it is just slow.
    I would be more than happy to get back to something a like sub 7.30 minute training milage, but just cannot seem to get out of this plodding unattractive pounding.

    So I thought I would go back to the drawing board and start doing some fartlec and interval training with short rests like I once was able to do, just to get a bit of Omph and speed

    Those days are sadly gone if last nights performance was anything to go by, but will still stick with it and maybe cut the sprints down to 200 mtrs

    They're all way faster than my times HM - 1:37/ FM 3:32 both done in the last couple of years. However, even in my mid-forties I'm still getting faster every year.

    Due to quite a few long term injuries I've reduced the running significantly and joined a triathlon club. Targets are about training time rather than distance and now average 35 hours month of swimming, cycling and running. Target is to complete an ironman next year and come top 10 in my club championship.

    I just try and keep fit enough so that I can take part in interesting stuff if it comes up - winter three peaks, 5.5 mile charity swim, Alps cycling week, relays etc. Got an epic Kayak planned too if the weather ever settles down.

    I love Texas hold em, just do the tournaments though, can't lose much money that way.

    I don't play but a friend of mine won the Irish open (about 750k) plus other minor tournaments and he does the commentary on Sky now and then.

  • I have now switched to cycling as I was having to rest every year for about 2-3 months from running injuries. I got into cycling by trying to keep fit whilst injured from running, one day I timed myself on a cycle run and that was it, once I had a target to beat I was sold. So far it is going really well, 6 months in and no injuries.

    At the moment I ride a mountain bike with slick tyres, I can't quite decide whether I want to go further and get a road bike or just stick with keeping myself fit. I still jog twice a week but that is all.


    I wish I had started cycling earlier, it is just so much more enjoyable, have you tried rowing or the concept 2, that macine will do a bit of everything and not f*** your knees up.

    I have never been drawn to rowing, but I always liked cycling, but here's the funny part, I thought that it was too easy compared to running so I chased the challenge of running, which I had no particular talent for. At 54 I am far too old to get anywhere but that's not the point. The point for me is to be the fittest that I can be (for my age)

    Good luck to you, running on it's own is not a good thing. I am thinking of toying with a triathlon sprint or Olympic, I need to work more on my swimming first, no way the ironman though, you have to be nuts and it is a hell of a lot of training, I know I just do not have the drive for it, I wish I did.


    There is a good one called the tough guy that you want to look in too, hard but so much fun. Trouble with running is that it is just so boring.
    I have found it better to back off with training a little and enjoy it, I tended to binge train when I was younger at a painfull level to the point I get fed up of it.

    Trust me.. just give the concept 2 a go, you will get good cardio and good all over body strength, and you will burn calories if thats what you want.
    Their site is also brilliant, a good test for a lot of people is the 2000 mtr challenge, the site will tell you the level you are at, it is a real big thing in the fitness world.
