Pensioner benefits make up a third of the welfare bill. Why should taxpayer money go on a £200 winter fuel payment to working 60-year-olds, even if they are higher rate taxpayers?

Pension age is now 66. I suspect that free bus passes and winter fuel will be raised to the pension age; as they should.

We can't keep punishing those that work by taking away any benefits we are giving to those that didn't work hard for their old age. This is what is causing the resentment towards the "entitled to" class. Rewarding bad behaviour, never works.
RENTING? Have you checked to see that your landlord has permission from their mortgage lender to rent the property? If not, you could be thrown out with very little notice.

I don't think it's fair that people assume they can have a baby, get a free house and live happily ever after without having to contribute. There is a big sense of entitlement out there and I think it's terrible. I also think it's totally immoral that people have more children just to get a bigger council house.

There's no easy way to seperate the people who are genuinely in need from those who just want to cheat the system though.

My partner and I are 25, we've never received housing benefit. When my partner was out of work we moved in with my Mum until he got a new job - BUT I must admit, we did look into whether we could claim housing benefit. Not everyone is as lucky as us in having a parent able to accomodate them should the worst happen. If Cameron pushes this through, I really hope that they take into account that it can't be "one size fits all", the modern family is sadly very complicated!

I think the government can be a bit ageist though, why should a 24 year old have to live with a parent when a 26 year old can potentially get housing benefit? It used to annoy me about working tax credit too, under 25s can't get it. Same as when my partner was claiming JSA, he got a reduced rate as he was 24 at the time. Some under 25s are married with kids, settled in a house with a mortgage, paying their taxes, why should they be treated any differently when things go wrong?

I do agree that this sense of entitlement should be discouraged, but people who have proven themselves to be hard workers should be treated fairly. Those who believe they can get something for nothing need to be educated and helped - they think this for a reason, which could be many, but the cause for individuals needs to be discovered so that they can be helped into work. I believe that everyone wants to work deep down, a life on benefits is boring and depressing and very quickly sucks all of your self esteem away.

    1) why should an 18-24 year old pay the same percentage of tax and not be entitled to all of the benefits.

    2) why should someone living in the north east be paying the same percentage of tax and may only receive half of the benefits of someone living in london.

Cameron you dweeb, if you change the benefits people receive you should also change the percentage of tax people pay!! Your conservative party are a bunch of morons!!!

P.S. I have never claimed housing benefit, I have never been out of work but if I was i'd expect the same as what every other tax payer gets because I pay in to the system the same as everyone else who pays in.

I soooo agree with BargainBetty. Those on benefits should only be given enough to provide them with what they NEED (eg a bedsit for a single person is a warm, safe place to sleep).
If they WANT a flat or house of their own, then they should have to find a job and work/save for it. I had to.
I know a single mum with 1 toddler who gets housing benefit and lives in a 3 bedroom house.
Taxpayers are paying enough. I'm happy to pay for people to have a place to sleep. But I am tired of paying for people to live a better life than me!
The same goes for child benefit. I agree with families having child benefit. But after 3 children, they should expect to pay for their kids themselves. If they can't afford it, they can stop at 3!
The only exceptions to this can be if you have quadruplets etc.
Stop milking those who are working hard.
  • I think this is terrible i'm 30 now but left my parents home at 24 because it wasn't suitable for my deteriorating disability i had no choice but to move out into a specially adapted bungalow. if a person in my situation was to move out now at 16-24 would they get housing benefit or would it be straight into residential care? or would the rate of DLA you received be taken into consideration i.e. if you receive middle/high care DLA you get extra housing benefit.

The bottom line is that the "entitled to" class won't like these changes and those who are forced to pay for the entitled to class, will.
