It may be that someone other than the buyer signed for it. I ordered some goods from a well known high street store and after a while of not recieving them contacted them to ask why. They emailed back telling me that they had been delivered and giving me a tracking number which when checking onl;ine had been signed for by someone writing my surname but a different initial. It definitly was not me and there was no-one else it could have been. I asked around my neighbours but noone claimed having taken it and as I have had this many times before where a neighbour has signed and never had any problem I tend to believe them. The only thing we could come up with was that the delivery company must have signed it and not delivered it. It may not be common but it does happen. I think you need to ask the buyer to take this up with the royal mail as you have done everything that you should have done.

i agree that the above is possible.

in yesterdays post i received a parcel that was meant for somebody down the road with a completely different house name. the sealed part of the envelope had been poorly tape with thin clear tape and was half open. it appeared to contain a woolly jumper or cardigan wrapped in tissue paper that was printed with country designs or something similar. there was no return address on the package and no invoice inside it. i have taped it back up and will have to deliver it myself now.

in thursday or fridays post i received a large full jiffy envelope addressed to a youth club/group in a nearby town, the address is completely different to my own. the sealed flap of the envelope was not taped down efficiently and it contained a brochure and details of skiing trips for large groups. i took this to the post office to get them to re-deliver to the correct address.

a few weeks ago i received a package from amazon.co.uk addressed to somebody else. it was addressed to somebody in a nearby village - actually my old next door neighbour! i don't know what it contained as it was securely packaged. i took it to the post office to be re-delivered to the correct address.

You would have thought some sort of written test would have been in order for someone joining the Royal Mail?
I live in Scotland and my local postie is pretty good but when I lived in SE England I had to phone up about another piece of mail that was "missing" and was told by RM that my area had a "terrible reputation" for non-delivery!!!!

    Thanks everyone.
The guys address is 'unconfirmed' so I guess this means that I am not protected.
Anyway I emailed the buyer and said I had basically hit a brick wall and he would need to contact Royal Mail. He does not seem very happy about this, but I am moving in about a week and I have so much to do I could do without stupid things like this.

And to make matters worse someone who purchased a mobile phone has now started a dispute to say he has not received the item and I can't help but feel that this guy is definately trying to pull a fast one.
He lives in Israel - item was posted to his confirmed address - only using standard surface mail as this was the only shipping option he was willing to pay for.
Now my £160 is withheld so i can't withdraw it. I am going to scan and send him a copy of the receipt to prove it was posted, however I think it is strange that he is now 'no longer a registered user'.

I was married to a postman and the tests he had to undergo were very stringent. He had to know which counties most towns were in and be able to sort mail very fast. He also sat a maths test and an English test.
Misdelivery is more likely due to sloppiness or dishonesty, or perhaps Royal Mail selection standards have dropped to enable cost cutting.

Was the phone appropriately insured when you sent it by land mail? I don't give my buyers ANY choice - I price all my shipping options to include appropriate insurance and "signed for". If they don't want to pay this then they won't get to buy the phone... tough! I've sent stuff to Rep. Ireland and France and Germany and if they are genuine buyers then they will pay for the insured postage.
If it wasn't insured to it's real value then there is little you can do if it hasn't arrived :(

Oh well I guess I will have to learn from my mistakes then.
I always offer people the opportunity to pay for whatever postage they would like.
Also I wasn't aware the police would do anything about it wether it was in the UK or out?
