    Never touch the stuff
  • I don't think I've ever been in departure 4 hours!

If you begrudge paying for it then just take an empty bottle and fill up from the taps in the bathroom.

It's more fun than you could possibly imagine. If possible sit by a Ryanair gate and watch the people with huge suitcases try and pass them off as cabin bags. The best bit is when they ram them into the cage and can't get them out again.

You do realise the water that comes out the taps in the (free) bathrooms is coming from the exact same source any water fountain would be getting it from?

That's easier said than done. The basins in the loos are typically designed for washing one's hands, and unlike a sink they usually do not have sufficient space below the taps to fill a bottle.

No it isn't. Unless the water is specifically meant for drinking, which the hand washing water isn't, it must come out of a storage tank as taps in public places are "balanced" for safety reasons and do not work properly if under pressure
The common law of business balance prohibits paying a little and getting a lot. If you deal with the lowest bidder, it is well to add something for the risk you run, and if you do that you will have enough to pay for something better.

I really resent having to buy bottled water.

Some airports may have "hidden" drinking fountains. Stansted has one in the Belfast departure gates, for which I am very grateful. Though most people will have bought their water before they discover it. I have tried to find one in Belfast International but failed... though they have recently reinstated a smoking area, which must have cost a bit as it needs to be a little bit of outside air attached to the lounge. Maybe smokers complain more than people who object to buying bottled water :D

I happily drink tap water from toilet washbasins anywhere in the UK and most other countries where it's generally considered okay. However as NFH pointed out, they try to make it hard for you. Often now sinks only have hot water.

I have got into trouble for taking tap water into venues, for asking for tap water at the bar, and for filling up cups with tap water from the toilet washbasins. I've also noticed some venues are turning off the cold water supplies in the toilets and only leaving the hot.

    /rant.

The last time I tried to do this I found that the loos had 'spray' taps which reduce water flow. It's fine for hand-washing but you can't fill a bottle.
