It is becoming almost essential to build a stock cupboard now. Prices are rocketing and will continue to do so . There will always be bargains but you need the money to hand to get them.
If you get into the habit of buying what is on a good offer your stocks will build without much effort.

I bought some chopped ham from mr m a couple of weeks ago at 1.79 a tin and it had 33% extra in it. It has gone down to £1 a tin so I am going to add some more to the three I got on Sunday. I don't like it a whole lot as it is but it is fine in cooked dishes such as rice and peas cooked in a chicken stock. It is a bit of extra protein and it has a long date on it.

With these new cuts planned I am getting more stock to store in and using up what is in the freezer for normal meals at the moment. Dh has only just over four years till retirement and because what little private pension he did have is now worth next to nothing we have to plan like mad for at least the essentials.
  • grandma47 I buy ye olde oak ham in poundland, much nicer than plopped ham and chalk. I got a huge tin of mackerel in farmfoods for £1 as well.
Blessed are the cracked for they are the ones that let in the light

Happy so far, I think it's great now I've done it. I can relax a little now as winter is just lurking around that corner and I love staying in on cold days watching people struggle to the shop or the chippy and we do not need to go anywhere or ring for lovely food hehe.

Did a bootsale this morning , then went to Lidls and got a some of their Cein toiletries. We already use their shampoo and conditioner, but have never used anything else of the range.
I got Q10 face cream, shower gel, hand wash, mens shower gel and deodorant.
Will let you know how we get on. I hope it's good, it's a lot cheaper than anything else I have seen.:)

Well Ds, who has asd, thinks the mens stuff is fine. (so it must be ok:rotfl:)
I haven't gone wrinkly yet so face cream seems to be working. My skin feels soft, so I'm happy.
Nobody has mentioned the hand wash, and I am taking that to be a good sign.

So I will now be getting my toiletries in Lidls.:j

    Christmas Cupboard week 6 -

3 x Bleach (50p in Wilkinsons) wanted more but could not carry it :(
    4 x Shreddies (£1 Tescos)

Got a real bargain yesterday. One of my friends brought round a 5l bottle of clothes softener (the one I use). It had hardly been used. Her neighbour had given it to her, as she didn't like it and was going back to her normal one.
My friend gave it to me as there is only her and her husband, and she thought I could use it. :A

Wish I had an Asian shop near me - only got a choice of Tescos, Aldi, Co-op and a pound shop.

You've got more than me. We've got a Shoprite (local Isle of Man supermarket) which doesn't stock much of what I want, Co-op which doesn't stock anything I want, and a Tesco which is 16 miles away so is a once a week trip. I'd love an Aldi, Lidl or Netto to open up here.

A pound shop equivalent opened up in Douglas a few months ago, but I call it the Pound-plus-VAT shop because everything is £1.20 :rotfl:

It's in the city centre and a nightmare to get to in the mornings I'm 6 miles away from it. Wished it was at the end of my road lol.
I'm trying to go once a month and take a list of things, the norm bread n milk will be from asda or tesco.

I buy random things on offer, OH does the mealplanning and sticking to the list thing, I'm impressed on how well he's learned to look out for reduced items, he got some go ahead bars recently for v.cheap and crumpets - I love those! (:
store cupboard always has rice/pasta, tomatoes (Asda has the KTC ones on offer again 4 for £1 but we can't carry huge amounts), beans and currently heinz soup - soo looking forward to that when it gets colder (also an Asda offer, 50p for a can of heinz soup). flour we replace as it gets used (although it's been 45p, most places now have it at 52p/1.5kg - Asda, Aldi, Lidl)
I do tend to keep an eye on uht milk if we have any, but not seen any good offers around and we have 3+ places around that sell fresh milk for £1 2.2L/4pints - to use uht milk up, it works well in a white sauce or dessert whip (:
Random stuff I look out for includes cans of soup, canned fruit (to make fruit crumble etc), sauces, cans of chickpeas/beans/mixed beans etc
  • Anyone know the cheapest place for porridge oats and own cornflakes a£di £idl asd* tesc* morris*ns Sainsbrys . All are a short drive away
