Another potato linkie http://www.idahopotato.com/recipes/cat_id-12
and I have one for a chocolate cake if you're interested :rotfl:
wondercollie you must have to shop in a whole different way living on the prairies  do you do a bulk shop every so often or do you find you use a lot of dried goods more eg milk?
And if you have herbs in the garden I often do just a mash potato with cheese and herbs in it (with a pinch of mustard powder or chilli flakes..)0 -
My Christmas Stores...week 2

Most people I know do two big shops a month and pick up milk when it runs out. Having said that I (and my bestie who grew up in Newfoundland) keep at least a dozen cans of evaporated milk in the pantry.
So in a way, I work on the stockpile year round. I do know that if I'm not working (I try and take most of January off as my vacation, don't have enough seniority at work for July or August) I don't really have to go out. There is basics for everyone, kibble for the Collie, and I bake more at that time of the year.
Oh, and our gas prices went up this morning from $1.14 yesterday to $1.19 today. And I live in a province that has gas and oil!0 -
wondercollie - i have stored evaporated milk, but usually i buy skimmed UHT milk, which tastes exactly the same as everyday milk to me and does not need to be refridgerated until opened, so i always try to have about 6 litres stored in my pantry
p.s. evaporated is too fattening for me (lol), but nice though0 -
I find commercial canned potatoes explode when roasted or fried and yet my home canned ones do not. Mine are pressure canned as are the commercial ones but I wonder if they use greater pressure so it drives the moisture inside ?
On the subject of things getting smaller i went into the f@rmfoods shop Yesterday and bought two "large" Cornish pasties for a pound. I got a shock when I put them in the remoska they were about half the size of fresh ones I sometimes buy in l1dl. I think they are £1.49 for three. I am going to have to batch cook some because ds3 likes them for lunch sometimes.0 -
I did sausage and mash for dinner last night using the instant mash. It went down very well. Only a very slightly unusual taste, but with lots of salt and pepper you can drown that out! I'm going to try the potato bread this weekend. I think I'll get a few more in for emergencies, and if they do last a lot longer than the date on them I won't worry about them going over date.
One thing which did puzzle me though - the instructions are to mix 410ml water, 140ml milk and add the 120g of potato, which to me adds up to 670g, but the packet says "this will make 630g". Can't they add up or does 40g disappear into the ether somewhere :rotfl:0 -
I buy the large packs of Sainsbury's basics instant mash (45p for 250g, about 6 servings) but don't bother doing it the way recommended on the pack, I simply add hot water and have found the taste improves immensely if you use plenty of salt and a little butter. I agree they're good for fish cakes. I sometimes use them to make potato cakes, too.
I also get their basics tinned potatoes (19p) and found the best way to cook these is to cut them into chunky slices, coat them them in seasoned flour and fry them. They don't spit so much when floured, I found and also go browner faster.0 -

Robinsons Mincemeat has gone up to £1.32 in our MrT Express.
I got mine at 21p but it never said anywhere is was on offer at that price.
Bit naughty if you ask me. Surely it wasn't a mistake, it was that price for too long.
Not that I need any more, but still :mad:0 -

It's because they've started getting their Christmas stock in, so prices for it have to rise, or am I being just a tad cynical . I've still got a jar from last year which should do us - we don't eat that many mince pies, and DH is trying to lose weight just by cutting out snacks (he's lost nearly a stone in 4 weeks).0
