Wasn't sure where this should go...
ABC News in the States says that even in America people are looking for cheaper brands and switching to others to save money but guess what...many manufacturer's are making their products smaller but charging gthe same price as the larger version. When asked by ABC what's going on the manufacture's said that consumers prefer smaller goods. They don't reduce their prices though...
Some examples...

It's the same in Canada. We don't want smaller sizes. The manufacturers know we notice price increases but usually don't notice the backs being reduced by 30grams.
Anything wheat or cannola based has jumped drastically. I live on the prairies, the breadbasket of much of the world and bread is rising in cost every time I shop. Cannola oil is very popular here for cooking.
Much of the price rise is being blamed on the poor harvest and the use of bio-fuels.
Dairy is stupidly expensive here. 4litres of milk? The cheapest I've found is $4.69.
Milk is roughly the price of gas/petrol for us.0 -
Heavenleigh your store room looks fab well done :T Very organised, mine is in desperate need of a tidy up atm due to a few good offers on at Approved for stuff we use a lot
My racks have a little bit sticking up on the top rather than a smooth edge like yours so I have little fabric bags hooked over to hold all those little bits I always seem to lose
I'll take another updated pic once I've tidied it all up..
I'm nipping out to MrS in a mo for a few bits I've noticed I've run out of plain tortillas and although I have loads of chilli ones I like to have a couple of plain in for OH,I do have the stuff to make them but need the convenience sometimes of slap and zap:rotfl:0 -
I sorted through my stock yesterday and found about 20 tins of kidney beans, half a dozen bags of oats (I've put them in the freezer now to stop them going rancid), about 10 tins of peaches and half a dozen of pineapple. I've taken out the ones which are over or just about up to their date (I know that tins keep longer than that though) so we have to use about 8 tins of the peaches and most of the pineapple to use up. I've swapped some tins from my kitchen cupboard with the ones in the store - now there are 10 tins of baked beans in the kitchen and the same amount in the store. I've freed up a whole storage box though, so I can carry on stocking up. I just need to actually go through the list and see what I need. DH insisted we buy packets of Value instant potato, and they are now well out of date as we would have to be pretty desperate to eat them anyway. Oh to have shelves to put everything on.0

Our Petrol is over £6.50 + a gallon here, which is approx $9.75 Canadian  and 75% of that is duty and VAT
I must admit to building a stock cupboard with as much as I can afford, so that when the real price hikes hit, I like many others will have a bit of a buffer to help out with other big rises in utilities and fuelBlessed are the cracked for they are the ones that let in the light

Justamum, Instant mash is freeze dried and as such has a very long shelf life, far longer than the date that they put on the packets, years in factBlessed are the cracked for they are the ones that let in the light

Thanks. Do your recipes make it taste edible? :rotfl:I've eaten Smash in the past, but am very dubious about the cheapy ones we've got.Butterfly_Brain wrote: »Justamum, Instant mash is freeze dried and as such has a very long shelf life, far longer than the date that they put on the packets, years in fact
Thanks for that - I might hang on to it then. I'm interested in seeing D&DD's recipes for it though. It might be worth trying one to see and if it's ok I can then buy more - you never know, times might get so desperate that powdered spuds are luxury :rotfl:
We've got some tinned potatoes too. Not had those before I don't think. I've got some parboiled potatoes in the freezer - when I do roast potatoes I freeze the extra parboiled ones for future use. I do the same when potatoes are starting to 'go over' a bit.0 -
I always use instant mash in fish cakes or add to home made soups to thicken them up a bit juastamum
I have also managed to roast tinned potatoes in the past when we were skinter than we are nowBlessed are the cracked for they are the ones that let in the light
