  • Quick question to those who put flour in the freezer, this is going to sound daft but....

Does it need defrosting first or is it fine to use straight away?

To be honest I've never frozen it before, but I should imagine it would defrost extremely quickly.

From what I've read, the eggs are there all the time, and freezing for 48 hours kills the eggs. I might have read that on this thread - definitely on one of the Oldstyle threads anyway :)

It was on thread called 'My Flours Moving' and it is only a couple of weeks old.

It did say that after 48 hours the flour could be removed from the freezer and store in the normal way.:)
  • Heavenleigh - Wow! I'd love a storecupboard like that, all in one place. Mine is\will be scattered between kitchen cupboards, hall cupboard and garage :)

We relied quite heavily on our storecupboard in the last couple of months (only buying fresh milk, fruit and veg to cut costs) and it is looking sadly depleted so i'm aiming to build it up again for the winter

Off to have a look on Approved Foods and see if it is worth me putting an order in, i find though that many items are things we just don't eat (jarred sauces, baked items, tinned soups etc).

I've also been adding extras to the past couple of weeks shopping so my stock of pulses, flour, pasta, tinned goods etc is slowly building back up.

People may laugh but i care not, me and my 'WW3' cupboard as DH calls it are very happy :D

    Great thread!

    Re flour in the freezer.
You might want to let the flour to come to room temperature if making bread because cold slows down the yeast.

That's why I never ordered from AF but as to your other point, I am finding many more people doing a store cupboard/cupboards after I mention it or they admit they are already doing so and I have not yet met anyone that laughs at the idea. In another way our stores are our own food banks...because I know if we don't many more us may be looking for help from charities and organisations and even they may end up struggling.
