    good to hear happycrafter!

we've been working on replacing the kitchen and fitting out the pantry so my stocks have been run right down but I've just written the first shopping list to start to stock back up again! that said I can still make meals for the next week with hardly anything needed apart from fresh fruit, veg, milk and bread. I am so pleased that I have a storecupboard approach and have learnt so much from MSE over the years :D

I have learned a lot from other posters and like you have said the store room and the items in the fridge freezer has allowed me to eat well and mix and match what I use...I may be eating less but still benefitting.

And every meal can be different, I suspect that I could have virtually a different mel every day and not repeat things...some people think having a store cupboard means the meals are the same day after day...

I guess I have a store cupboard (all cupboards full to bursting and a chest freezer. The same).

I haven't planned tngs this way, I just buy far too much stuff! I've been trying to run down my store a lot of it is basic stuff that we dont necessarily eat often but is handy to have around. My freezer, you can barely find the stuff to put together a meal wit without emptying the darned thing!

As I am a bit of a hoarder and buy far too much stuff I'm hoping not to have lots of stocks of stuff that never gets used but I need to have a think about what we actually use/need and then maybe have 3 or 4 of each?

It's been suggested I should get a little chest freezer, my fridge freezer is packed too...

I'll never cook all the things I'd like to that I see on the internet and I have some great cook books but I think that I must pick a different recipe each day and do it!

I can get pleasure just looking at the pictures...it sometimes means I adapt something but being single i ahev to try and make the measurements to suit one person so everything is smaller. I got a great book today(new)only £2 full of meals that can be done in one pot(1,001 recipes)soups, casseroles, stews, stir fry and desserts.

its sad but people just don't get it, do they?

Each of our store cupboards will be different, the point is to buy and store what YOU will use. I've never seen anyone on this thread saying 'you must buy pasta, rice, tins of this or that...', none of it is compulsory :D

So true. I have periods of extreme tiredness, depression and anxiety which affects my appetite, and can go weeks of eating the same things day in and day out, because I'm not hungry but know I must eat. One of my fave meals right now is tinned spaghetti, and I know many will throw up their hands in horror, but I'm ok with that. I do eat fruit, not as much veg as I should but it does vary. So my store would look pretty boring, bland and about as exciting as watching paint dry, but I've learned to get what I know I will eat, and is especially useful, when all I can do some days is to put a tin in the oven to heat up.

My DD (she's autistic) has a supply of ready meals for when she is poorly, or is lacking in energy or imagination to put a meal together, and she does at least then get her meat and veg. Delivered by a popular company that supplies meals on wheels.

On the odd occasion I actually have an appetite and it's lucky enough to coincide with a good day I then enjoy cooking a meal from scratch.

I wasn't always this way, I used to love cooking. So as I say my cupboard is for me, no-one else.

    What is a stock cupboard?
  • To me a stock cupboard is individual and none are completely the same. It doesn't have to just include a cupboard but can be the freezer, fridge etc

Mine contains all the building blocks to make meals that our family like to eat so I have
    herbs/spices
    tinned tomatoes
    lentils and beans
    rice, couscous and pasta
cheese in the freezer usually grated in a big box
    flours
i buy a big bag of onions and chop them up in the processor and bag in to portions in the freezer

when I can get a big bag of potatoes I cut them in to wedges/roasts and par boil then freeze so none go to waste.

reusing containers - one thing that would make things easier for me and cheaper would be reusing food containers.

Been reading a lot of threads on old style moneysaving and taking notes, and noticed people reusing their milk bottles and juice bottles to store food! I wish i had thought of that earlier but had assumed it would not be safe to reuse these containers so always recycled them.

Read a thread about people getting insects in their storecupboards and having to throw food away as a result and after that everything went in airtight containers instead of the original packaging.

Oh yeah now having a problem on where to put stuff - can i put things in the fridge that only need to go in the fridge once opened? Some things say refridgerate once open and use within 6 weeks. If i put these in the fridge does the 6 weeks start immediately or still once opened? If it was possible to put extra things in the fridge it would be really helpful.

The 6 weeks only starts once the product is opened as that is when bacteria/airborne moulds can enter... You can store what you want in there until the BBD (and beyond) if it is unopened :)
