rude, and unused to basic cooking! Get me off this thread before i say something i don't regret but wont be tolerated in public!!!!!!

Lol because I do not agree with you I am rude and not used to basic cooking oh please now its me trying not to say something I do not regret.

One of the reasons I very rarely come onto this section of the board.

What a boring world we would live in if we all did things your way!

What on earth do you eat then? The types of food that people say they have in stock are pasta, rice, couscous, pulses, tinned tomatoes, jars of things, herbs, spices, flour, sugar. Bases for most meals. Surely you don't live on ready meals?

I did not say we do not eat al of those foods but possibly only eat them once a week.

Nah not microwave meals chips, nuggets, sausages, take aways let your imagination go crazy :rotfl:

She didn't say you were rude because you didn't agree with her. She said you were rude because you wrote:
"90% of your meals being cooked the same way with the same ingredients sounds very boring. We like to enjoy our food how boring eating the same thing day in day out. "
Do you not think that sounds rude? Particularly since the OP of the thread you were quoting had said 90% of her meals started the same way, frying an onion, (hence the reference to basic cooking) and that they didn't repeat a meal in 6 weeks.

A while back on the storecupboard we were talking about how to cook food if the electric or gas went off and we've invested in a camping stove but we all talked about how to light a room if it's dark and the usual things were talked about...candles, tealights, wind up torches and lanterns, possibly prafain lamps but I've just seen these...

Wonder if they'd be bright enough and they only use tealights...

The price is not bad...and they are only needed for emergencies though could be handy if saving the cost of an electric light...

I do like them, so might treat myself when hubby is paid next week.

One plus you get if you have to rely on candle power for light for a bit is extra heat - on the very few times we have had a power cut and I had to use my candles it did not take long before the room was very, very warm......

My kitchen is the coldest place in the house next to downstairs toilet and in winter I very often will light candles in my 5 candle holder bracket I have on the wall to warm up the room and its works brilliantly - the coldness is the downside to having an electric built in oven. Never thought of this when I went for an electric oven after always having a gas cooker - hob is gas so whenever I have to change oven I will replace it with a gas one. Mind you bought a halogen oven this week and it certainly throws out the heat so my wall oven might just be used now as storage for all oven ware for most of the time.

I posted on the make do and mend thread that I contacted my HA to see if maybe they would be interested in me teaching people about Storecupboarding (I have made this a real word now:rotfl:) and got a resounding yes as fits in with their plans to help tenants manage their money with all the cuts that are kicking in next April. So am busy writing up info on the hows, why and reasons why one is a good idea and how it can indeed help you budget better. They also amazed me by asking did I know anything about coping at home during emergencies so pointed them in the direction of the yahoo group I formed 11 years ago as proof I do so now waiting for them to get back me so we can work out how we go forward with this - talks, leaflets, small book, maybe personal one to ones with people who are unsure about tailoring one for their family and where to store anything both as in day to day store cupboard and emergency supplies like alternative heating, lighting etc.

I find it very hard to believe something I have been passionate about for years and people (family and friends alike) thought I was mad even thinking about.

All this is voluntary and they know about my health problems and are willing to work with me around them - instead of maybe a lot of talks to small groups maybe just a few to big groups.....trying to put leaflets together that explains it all simply and a small book that expands on the ideas for those that want a bit more info.

I am so excited at maybe being able to at last help people feel more in control of their lives and know they should always have some kind of back up.......its what I have basically dreamed of for well over 15 years.

Lots of people who prepare like me want to stay out of the light so no-one knows they do this but I just want people to have emergency options and if this means me standing up and saying yes I have done some of these things, never afford all of them I am willing to. I am not an expert by any means but I am passionate about it so hopefully that will make others who never considered Storecupboarding think about it.:)

its sad but people just don't get it, do they?

Each of our store cupboards will be different, the point is to buy and store what YOU will use. I've never seen anyone on this thread saying 'you must buy pasta, rice, tins of this or that...', none of it is compulsory :D
... don't throw the string away. You always need string! :D

  • I would also say I start approx 90% of my meals with frying some onion and garlic - it adds so much flavour! and we definitely DO NOT have a boring diet, in fact I would say it's very varied.

I would also say that 90% of our meals contain vegetables of some sort, does that make it boring too?!

Im gradually building my store cubard back up after having a sort out and running it down.
It doesnt mean necessarily the same old food, but for me the essentials i use to try and cook from scratch such as garlic/herbs/stock cubes, rice and pasta to things such as tins of soup/macaroni cheese that i sometimes eat as a standby in case.

Im still trying to get the hang of cooking from scratch as much as having a store cubard but it getting thier slowly.
