  • We do have storage. We are Mormon and we are working our way towards a year's worth of storage. Not just food but toiletries and clothes too. Also cleaning products and medication.
Along with that we have emergency packs full of everything we would need in a 72hr period if there was some kind of disaster.

    It's nice to be prepared!
  • How do you actually manage to physically find storage for that much Kathryn?

Ex's store only ever contains grand total of 3 small tins of beans, one tin of sardines, and one bag of crisps. He has nothing in freezer. I hope he doesn't expect me to feed him if we get snowed in again! Perhaps I should point out to him now that he needs to build up a bit more grub in reserve.

He's your Ex, Honey. You're no longer responsible for him. Tell him, if you must, that you won't be his back-up-plan but otherwise leave well alone.

You have to be inventive! I know people that make side tables from tins and cover with a cloth, I know someone that had those cheap internal doors and pulled the panel off and put a couple of hundred of packets of soup in there!

Also, take the kickboards from under the cupboards in your kitchen and you can store bottled water under there. You can put stuff under beds and in wardrobes. Behind and under the sofas.

I tried to put a link in this post but it wouldn't let me :( If you google lds emergency preparedness you'll probably find it though.

I'm currently trying to use up some of the stuff in my store cupboard!

DM says she can't believe how much stuff is in the cupboards - and she doesn't know that the cabinet in the lounge has more stuff in it!:o

It's split into [STRIKE]2:[/STRIKE] - going to change this to 3:

    1) Winter emergency supply

Has around 4-6 weeks worth of toiletries / cleaning stuff - this is never used as the stuff doesn't go OOD and around 4 weeks of basic meals that could be cooked on a camping stove (pasta n sauce, savoury rice, soup, porridge etc) plus the usual basics.

I have had to use some of this stuff recently as it has been getting close to / past it's OOD ... and will need to replace some of it.

I live in a rural area & in the bad winter a couple of years ago - the local shop ran out of stuff by lunchtime & had no deliveries for over 4 weeks . Only 1 small SM in the town where I work & again they hardly had any deliveries ..... would rater be prepared than have to worry about it:D

It's an 18 mile round trip to the nearest town with a proper SM and would rather not have to go if the weather bad if I can help it!

    2) Everyday cupboards

I stock up when things are on offer - budget is tight.

Lots of things like big bags of pasta and rice & have just got 6 packs of porridge as it's been on offer - the savings really add up but it's easy to just keep buying more & more and not actually use any of it!:o

Funds are currently really tight so I'm trying to use some of the stocks up ... but it worries me a bit letting them run down!

    3) Pets

I've bulk bought their stuff for around a year now & have made huge savings doing this.

I would always make sure there's at least 4 weeks supply coming up to the winter - can't imaging anything worse than trying to struggle a 1.5 miles from the bus stop in snow trying to carting along a bag of cat litter!

I have a couple of friends who literally have 1/2 packet of pasta & maybe some rice & the odd tin in their cupboards ...... I'd be a nervous wreak!

    Ohhhhh that's a fab idea :D

One of mine is loose and falls off constantly - I've got bottled water (tap water is vile!) just about everywhere!

  • Chickens in Aldi have really gone up in price since last week
Medium was £3.49 now £3.89 and small was £2.59 now £2.99
Chicken leg quarters that were 99p are now £1.19 :(
I expect things will be much worse next year :(
Blessed are the cracked for they are the ones that let in the light

Can i ask and i know i will be getting a bit of a slagging off for this but have you done a net search for alternates for cat litter my cat is 16 now and i noticed him limping off the litter tray (with the fullers earth stuff ) now i use shredded paper and the tiniest bit of litter it does need to be cleaned each day it does not smell and there is no dust..and most importantly no limping

Ohhhhh I've done lots of research!:)

A few of us on the Pets Board trialled some (both for effectiveness & cost) and also same happened on another forum I'm on.

I now use a good quality sand type clumping one - fairly expensive initial outlay as you need a fair bit to make it deep enough but it lasts for ages and you rarely need to do a full change providing it's cleaned out when "things" happen;). It has a lovely smell & I've never seen dust off it. Thanks :)

  • I still live at home but I fully intend on having a stock of tins (chopped tomatoes, pasta, rice and chickpeas are my usual staples here) when I move out. We also have an insane amount of toilet rolls and tea bags since my nan stockpiles these when they're on offer. I'd just like to be prepared for any emergencies or if I ever end up so broke that I can't afford to go shopping. :) There are some great ideas in this thread, so thank you for providing me with some inspiration!
