G300 for £100, best at the moment...
The 710 which was going for around £130 in Carphone Warehouse on PAYG seemed an excellent buy.

I know someone with the 800 and that looked good and he is very pleased with it.

    Hi,
My old phone is about to die so I'm wanting to upgrade.

I'm on giffgaff so don't want a contract phone. I'm not bothered about having the latest model, just want decent fast internet and something easy to use and doesn't take too much tweaking. I'm after something I can get second hand for about £100 - 150.

I was looking at the iphone 3gs but have been persuaded out of that because of the faults they are prone to. At the moment I'm looking at the HTC Desire S but I really don't do tech so is there anything similar I should look at?

    Thanks

why second hand when you can get brand new both phones have many happy customers:)

Also do not buy the San Deigo, there is no way to unlock it without waiting 3 months for Orange (yet). Also it's locked down tighter than a ducks !!!!, so no root/custom ROM fun.

    Still? Bad news. :(
The massive community movement around the Blade (OSF) is what drew me in, knowing I could choose from more OS builds than my PC for instance, and users from this very forum coming back & reporting "normal person" success sealed the deal..
I would have hoped that it's spiritual successor would have had the same wide-open treatment by now.

Those arguments you see over this-or-that update are silly & pointless; Personally I would never even consider a particular smartphone unless I had the same level of control as I do with a real computer, anything else is just asking for future grief, so nice advice to the OP.

The Wildfire S is an awful phone, do not buy it.

My sister has one and is happy, but then she just like the Op would not use a lot of the features. Just wants a phone with a bit more, plus internet access. It works better with a firmware upgrade, a standard thing with most smartphones.

The Wildfire S is good for the price.
New forum. New sig. Yes I still need to lose 2 stone!

Whatever you do. Do not be tempted by the HTC Wildfire S. Awful awful awful. It may get good reviews but that's simply because it's an HTC model for entry level so no matter what, it will get stupidly high reviews. It's slow, has a rubbish screen and is prone to freezing. My friend got his about 3 months ago and is now regretting not splashing the cash for a better model.

As someone has mentioned, the Orange San Francisco is a good phone (ZTE produced as well if I remember rightly) and compares pretty well against phones such as the HTC Desire.

Also, have a look at the Samsung Galaxy Mini as well as the Optimus L3

    No it isn't.

It's massively underspec'd for the price.

It's £30 or so more expensive than the Ascend G300, and worse in almost every way* barring it's brand name.

    * screen size, screen resolution, storage, processor, battery, will never see official ICS, no NFC

You can pick up a second hand Galaxy S2 for less than £150. I would go for that. Fab phone imo.

    Don't get the Lumia 710...

A bad phone all round, I find, and now an orphaned legacy device.
I shot a vein in my neck and coughed up a Quaalude.

You can upgrade the windows phones

    http://www.zdnet.co.uk/blogs/500-words-into-the-future-10014052/windows-phone-78-is-it-more-than-a-start-screen-10026455/

What the news mean is some functions will only available to newer devices. For example the Samsung s3 have s voice (Siri) but if you update the s2 it will not have that function. The Microsoft is going to use two version numbers for upgrade 7.8 for current users and 8 for new phones with higher specification. I think this make the things easy for people to understand unlike like android where some apps don't work after the update such as SkyGo.
