I really need wireless help

Options
Hi.

I am looking for somebody to give me some wireless advice. I am a complete novice to setting this sort of thing up so please bear with me.

I have a pc ad laptop(wireless enabled Packard bell) and have been given a Linksys Etherfast Cabe/DSL router with 4 port switch and a Belkin Wirless Network Access point 54g.

The modem I am working from feeds to my pc using a usb plug and I would like to use this or the standard cable from the phone line to the internal computer modem. The router and wireless access point both talk about ethernet cables but all I seam to have in the back of my pc is a point for either the standard modem cable (slighty smaller than the ethernet one) and a usb point.

In an ideal world I would like to connect to the internet on my laptop without cables and it would also be good to share the printer.

As you can see from all this I need advice so any would be apprecated.

You have all the kit you need, to share dial-up wirelessly.

You need to connect the Belkin WAP to your PC's NIC with an ethernet Cat5e patch cable.

Then set-up internet connection sharing (ICS) in the PC. Your laptop will then be able to connect wirelessly to this shared internet connection.

Don't forget to enable the wireless security in the Belkin WAP and your laptop.

hi Mjenn5...i ve just installed wireless router (Netgear) for my laptop last week and im using AOL broadband. I think you need to know that aol recommend certain routers (Linksys is not one of them) to use to connect to aol wirelessly....if you go to aol keyword and type wireless network you will find all the information you need.

Where do I put the ethernet cable as the only slot I can see is for the smaller but similar modem cable.

If I got all that to work does that mean I would use the dial up internal modem on the pc and the laptop would connect to it?

Another question I have is do I need to connect the broadband modem to the router or if I was to get a wirless usb point for the pc would he laptop be able to use the broadband modem via the wireless point through the pc?

Sorry about this but as I say I am very confused.

You need to get an ethernet pci card to fit in your PC then. About a fiver.

Sorry, I'm confused; do you have dial-up or broadband?

    Thanks sam1970

I asked aol live help about that but they said it would only work with aol broadband gold which i dont have yet.

I was given the router and access point so I was going to give dial up a go for all the time I need it (although I hate dialup).

I am using these items as I am on a budget and the recommended method from aol would mean spending about £90- £100 on netgear equipment and upgrading to a more expensive broadband. Out my reach at the moment.

Ok in which case forget about broadband and the Linksys router you've got; it's redundant.

Set up as I described using ICS for your dial-up modem and connecting the laptop wirelessly to your PC via the Belkin to be on the same network and share. Sound like you will have to buy an ethernet card for the pc though.

Now I'm even more confused than you :rotfl:

Do you use your AOL broadband silver right now with a usb modem plugged into your pc?

If you have, forget about the dial-up modem. Again same architecture. Plug the Belkin into an ethernet card on the pc. Connect the laptop wirelessly to the Belkin. Set up ICS on the pc. Should work unless AOL block it on silver - I wouldn't know about that.
